NW'ern +16.5 at tOSU (ov/un 124.5) Thur 7 BTN

This is why you have to give respect to Northwestern sports. They are almost guaranteed to be outmatched athlete-wise but they play their hearts out every time. Got to give them props.

Ok, now why is Hightower getting into the middle of the huddle after Matta was yelling at him? There's no reason for that.

Because Hightower is a grandstanding clown who, in his mind, has to be the center of attention. The fact that he's been a Big Ten official for all these years speaks volumes for how little importance the Big Ten places on good officiating.

Give them props? They get the same annual $20-whatever million payout due to athletics that every other B1G school gets, and have a lucrative endowment but refuse to invest in their program and build a practice facility for their basketball team, and have the worst basketball arena in the league. There is virtually no commitment from Northwestern University to having a good basketball program.

They have kept a coach who has failed to lead them to the tourney in 13 seasons (make it 14 after this year) - 14 out of the 29 years there has been a 64+ team NCAA tourney field. It's really hard to miss the tourney that many times in the 64+ team tourney era and still keep a coaching job. All the other worst basketball teams in power 6 conferences - Rutgers, Nebraska and USF - have made the NCAA tourney at least two times apiece since the field expanded to 64+.

They've got what they've paid for, a losing team. Were they playing their hearts out when they lost to Nebraska by 15? When they lost to Iowa by 20? When they lost to Maryland at home by 20? When they lost to UM by 28 at home? When they lost to UIC? Every team has some games where they don't play their best, but they don't play their hearts out every game or else they wouldn't have as many embarrassing losses on their resume as what they have.

I don't blame the failures of Northwestern all on Carmody - the investment from the school is abominable - but he still has a mark of futility on his coaching resume due to his inability to get a team to the tourney in his lengthy tenure at NU.

Was secretly tracking the score on my phone during a boring meeting and was surprised at what I saw. A bit tougher than expected, but the important thing was getting the win.
