Here is an update from a Louisiana prospect where he discusses the ND Rivals site and a fabricated story regarding the prospect's alleged comments about wanting to commit to ND and trashing LSU. When the kid called the reporter, the guy said, " Don't worry, nobody will read that story anyway."

Recruiting has always been shady, but now that you have people making big money off of these kids, it is getting worse.

Thanks to UnionFutura for the find.

I'd like to think that people are interested in recruiting out of love of the game and because it's inspiring to see these student athletes excel. The idea of someone disrespecting and manipulating a high school student in the way described is utterly sickening.

Just like anything else, there is good and bad. There are a number of guys who interview the kids to help them get exposure...never any kind of prodding or leading questions. Then, there are the guys who try to read into everything and bait the kids. That is when the coaches/parents need to intervene.

To see it done right, look at guys like Greg Powers at Scout, Derek Williams at Sunshine Preps, and Bill K at Rivals. They aren't looking for the HUGE story...they are looking to help the kids.

but let me get something else straight... scout posts an article about how rivlas used bs stuff, to me its just feeding the cycle once again. im sorry but this is just another reason that i do not pay for this stuff anymore. it has gotten two far out of hand and basically uses these kids for all their worth at nearly any expense.

when i hear about something like this it reminds me of the end scene in the movie blue chips...i wish i could find the quotes.

Indeed. I know for a fact that Greg is very, very careful to represent players accurately with direct quotes and plain facts. He's very well aware of the way in which leading questions can distort an interview, and prefers to bring out what the kids are really thinking, not what they think he wants to hear. He's an excellent reporter.

I am as addicted to recruiting as anyone else. But I have alwasy felt that the whole idea of following the recruiting process is one of the most dysfunctional aspects of college sports. There is no way to do it right. HS kids should be able to make their college decisions without the involvement of fans in any way, shape or form.

Many folks in the 'media' are doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons, but ultimately the problem is us.
