I heard on the news this morning that it happened again yesterday evening

Yep, see sharks all the time when I'm over there.
There are 30 some odd shark attacks a year in FLA, I think last year it was much lower. It gets news when it is a young kid, the victim dies or is severely injured. This is the busy season for them and after last years hurricanes they need the tourist revenue. The sharks have caused some folks to head home early.

I'll be over there in two weeks. I imagine the pools will a lot more crowded than the beaches.

first the hurricanes, then red tide and now the shark attacks. People are just stayin away from the beaches. The thing that's scary about the shark attacks is that normally when a shark bites a person it will swim away. They don't know what it is and when they realize it isn't food they let go and leave. During the attack where the girl died it actually hung around and followed the guy who was rescuing her. I'll stick to the pool.

Some of the NW Florida beaches are my favorites in the US. I've been going there forever, never known anyone who has been attacked by a shark, and never heard of an attack while I was there. I would bet everything I own that I'll never be bitten by a shark. It is statistically next to impossible, so I just don't see any point in worrying about it or changing my behavior anymore than I worry about tornadoes or terrorists.

I currently live in Pensacola, just a bit west (~45 min) from the first attack over the weekend and I'm also a Marine Biologist associated with the University of West Florida in Pensacola. I have lived in Florida for 7 years (4 years in Tampa and 3 in Pensacola) and I can tell you with some authority that most of these 'incidents' occur during peak times or situations (i.e.- dusk, dawn and in mucky water) and by avoiding those times/situations, almost all of the reported 'incidents' would've probably been avoided. My thesis work and other research has focused almost entirely on sharks and their relatives. Sharks, and other marine dangers, are inherently linked with trips to the beach, but by heeding the advice of scientists, you can significantly lower the likelihood of an 'incident'. I'm planning on going to the beach this weekend and I have no reservations at all about swimming in the gulf and I would advise everyone else to enjoy the water as you normally would. More than likely, you've been within a few feet of a shark at some point in your life and you've never even known it.

It's always interesting to see how these things play out in terms of media coverage and the projected and/or resulting financial loss. But if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

But can you answer my statement that sharks are gay?

No Gay Sharks!

Thump-

I can honestly say that I have never seen a gay shark, but that doesn't mean they're not out there! :wink2:

Now that you mention it, I do remember a study a few years ago about a large, questionable population of sharks inhabiting Quahog, RI. Coincidence?

Do you know anything about land sharks?

I am still too terrified to answer the door whenever i get a candy-gram. :ohwell:

thump, if you see a shark wearing a ring in it's right fin, it's gay.

All I know about land sharks, I learned from Buffett, but I remember no mention of candy-grams

She came down from Cincinnati
It took her three days on the train
Lookin' for some peace and quiet
Hoped to see the sun again

But now she lives down by the ocean
She's takin' care to look for sharks
They hang out in the local bars
And they feed right after dark

Can't you feel 'em circlin', honey?
Can't you feel 'em swimmin' around?
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only bait in town

Oh oh
Oh oh
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only girl in town

She's saving up all of her money
Wants to head it south in May
Maybe roll in the sand with a rock 'n' roll man
Somewhere down Montserrat way

But the money's good in the season
Helps to lighten up her load
Boys keep her high as the months go by
She's getting postcards from the road

Can't you feel 'em closin' in, honey?
Can't you feel 'em schoolin' around?
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only girl in town

Sailed off to Antigua
It took her three days on a boat
Lookin' for some peace and quiet
Maybe keep her dreams afloat

But now she feels like a remora
'Cause the school's still close at hand
Just behind the reef are the big white teeth
Of the sharks that can swim on the land

Can't you feel 'em circlin', honey?
Can't you feel 'em schoolin' around?
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only bait in town
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only girl in town
