NCH is ranked #4 on the cnnsi.com boys top 25 high school basketball teams.

North College Hill (Cincinnati) (8-0)

The high-flying Trojans had a good week with three lopsided victories -- two of them in California. But first they gained revenge for their only defeat last season by beating Cincinnati St. Xavier before a crowd of 3,500, which included Kentucky coach Tubby Smith. The Trojans shot a sizzling 70 percent from the field. Junior superstars Bill Walker and O.J. Mayo led the way with 28 and 26 points, respectively.

The 6-6, 225-pound Walker, who never stops attacking the basket, had six dunks. Out west, Walker had 34 points and 15 rebounds, while Mayo contributed 30 points in a win over Harvard-Westlake. Mayo had 29 points and Walker added 25 points and 12 rebounds in a rout of Compton Dominguez.

Last week: Routed Cincinnati St. Xavier, 87-49, Harvard-Westlake (Calif.), 89-62, and Compton Dominguez (Calif.), 91-57.

Late NCH run buries Lancers
La Salle kept the game close through first half

crowd of more than 8,600 packed Fifth Third Arena on Thursday to see North College Hill juniors O.J. Mayo, Bill Walker and Keenan Ellis dazzle and dunk on the La Salle Lancers.

The Trojans, who collected six dunks in the game, didn't disappoint the crowd.

Neither did the Lancers, who provided NCH with a stiff challenge for three quarters.

The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Divisions II-VI area poll and No. 5 nationally by USA Today, got 23 points from Mayo and defeated La Salle, 78-61, in the second game of the Hoops on the Hill doubleheader played at Fifth Third Arena.

Walker added 14 points and 8 rebounds for NCH, which improved to 9-0.

La Salle (6-3), ranked fourth in the Enquirer Division I poll, was led by Bobby Austin, who scored 23 points. Tony Schmidt added 13 points for La Salle.
The Lancers out-rebounded the Trojans 38-37.

"We didn't come to play," said NCH head coach Jamie Mahaffey. "I think it's a matter of us not being focused. But, I thought La Salle played well. They gave a championship effort."

LaSalle, which trailed by only five points at halftime, sent a message to the Trojans early when Daniel McElroy blocked Walker's shot just seconds into the game.

The Lancers managed to stay close but the Trojans' superior size and quickness helped them pull away late in the second half.

"La Salle gave a great effort," said Mayo. "But, obviously we gave a very marginal effort. We definitely can play better."

La Salle's only losses this season have been to Lakota West and St. Xavier, the top two teams in the Enquirer Division I area poll.

"I couldn't be more proud," said Lancers head coach Dan Fleming. "Obviously (NCH) is a very talented team. But, our kids gave every ounce of effort."

NCH (10-0) is ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today, while Canton McKinley is No. 16.

NCH edges McKinley in battle of Ohio powers

By Tom Groeschen
Enquirer staff writer

COLUMBUS - Keenan Ellis swished a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give North College Hill a thrilling, 69-67 victory over Canton McKinley Saturday night, in a marquee matchup of two nationally ranked boys' basketball teams.

Ellis, the Trojans' slender, 6-foot-11 junior center, scored off an assist from junior guard O.J. Mayo. Mayo streaked downcourt with the ball, reached the top of the foul circle, then snapped off a pass to Ellis on the left wing. Ellis stroked a line-drive jumper as the final horn sounded at Ohio State's Value City Arena, and Trojans players sprinted onto the court and gleefully mobbed their hero.

"I felt if I got the final shot, I would hit it," said a grinning Ellis, who said it was the first game-winning shot of his career. "O.J. made a great play to get it to me."

NCH (11-0) is ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today. McKinley (8-2) is No. 16.

McKinley's only other loss was 51-50 to USA Today's No. 2-ranked team, Oak Hill Academy (Va.), in early December.

"Canton McKinley is good, but I feel like we're the best team in the state," Ellis said.

NCH is the defending Division III state champion, while McKinley is the reigning Division I champion.

The estimated crowd of 8,000 included former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins. The game was the sixth of seven games in the daylong Ohio Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic at Ohio State.

Junior forward Bill Walker led NCH with 26 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four dunks.

Mayo had 25 points, seven boards and five assists. Ellis had 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Mayo deflected questions about whether this proves NCH is tops in Ohio.

"The main thing was to get the win," said Mayo, who played well despite flu-like symptoms.

NCH led by as many as 11 points (22-11) in the second quarter. The Trojans had their running game in full gear early, but Canton McKinley kept its poise and fought back behind 6-7 forward Raymar Morgan (24 points, seven rebounds), a Michigan State recruit.

"We kept the ball out of Mayo's and Walker's hands for the final shot, but Ellis stepped up and made a big shot," McKinley coach Dave Hoover said.

"Give him credit."

NCH led by nine points early in the fourth period and was up six points (58-52) midway through the quarter. But McKinley forged a 67-67 tie on two foul shots by Marcus Parker with 12.2 seconds left. That set up the final sequence, after an NCH timeout with 6.6 seconds left.

On the final play, Mayo drew several McKinley defenders toward him as he drove toward the goal.

"I didn't think I'd be able to get all the way to the goal against a good Canton McKinley team, so I was looking to draw Bill's or Keenan's man to me," Mayo said. "I was able to find Keenan, and I had confidence he would make the shot."

NCH coach Jamie Mahaffey said the play was designed for Mayo to create something, either on his own or for someone else.

"I thought he'd be able to draw someone to him and maybe get the ball to Bill or Keenan," Mahaffey said. "I don't know if it went exactly like I thought it would, but it worked out. It was a game where we showed a lot of determination against a great team."

It was the closest game of the season for NCH, which had been winning by an average of 40.5 points a game. The Trojans' closest game had been 17 points, a 78-61 win over La Salle on Dec. 29.

"We haven't had many close games, and this is the first time we faced a team that might have had more athletic ability than us," Mayo said. "That's why it's such a good win."

The Trojans extended their overall win streak to 32, dating to last season.

Taft beat Columbus Brookhaven 80-70 and Hamilton beat Upper Sandusky 79-70 in two earlier Play-By-Play games here Saturday.

NCH handles Taft
Cintas sells out

By Tom Groeschen
Enquirer staff writer

North College Hill beat Taft 82-70 in their big boys’ basketball game today at Xavier’s Cintas Center, before a sellout crowd at the 10,250-seat arena.

Junior guard O.J. Mayo had 23 points, junior forward Bill Walker scored 22, and sophomore guard Courtney Davis had 20 for NCH.
NCH (13-0) is rated No. 2 nationally by USA Today.

The Trojans are ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Divisions II-IV poll and No. 1 in the Division III state poll.

Taft (11-1) is ranked No. 2 in both the Enquirer Divisions II-IV poll and the state Division II poll.

Junior guard Monsonna Torbert scored 22 points for Taft. Senior guard Heath White scored 17 and senior guard Eddie Gray scored 16.

Princeton beat Hughes 68-66 in the day’s first game at XU.

Princeton is No. 7 and Hughes is No. 2 in the Enquirer Division I poll.

The arena was virtually full during the Hughes-Princeton game, which preceded NCH-Taft. The day’s event officially was the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic.

NCH led 39-29 at halftime, with Mayo scoring 17 points before the break.

NCH scored off the opening tip-off, when the Trojans quickly got the ball to Walker for a high-flying slam dunk.

The Trojans ran out to leads of 17-2 and 21-4 before Taft regrouped.
The Senators cut the lead to 21-13 with a 9-0 run, but could not make much more headway before halftime.

Taft had considerable trouble penetrating against NCH’s zone defense, and the Senators’ big men were not a major factor. Taft’s 6-foot-8 seniors Brandon Russ and Tyrone Bradshaw, both usually double-figure scorers, each fouled out without scoring.

NCH made it more of a comfortable victory than last year’s MLK Day showdown with Taft. NCH won that one 80-73, and most of the same players returned this year.

Beat goes on for NCH
Trojans topple Taft 82-70 at Cintas Center

By Tom Groeschen
Enquirer staff writer

The message was sent, as it often is, with a thunderous Bill Walker slam dunk.
Walker scored with a soaring jam just off the opening tip, and North College Hill went on to beat Taft 82-70 in their heavily hyped boys' basketball game at Xavier's Cintas Center on Monday.
A sellout crowd reported at 10,560 - just over capacity - watched the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee.
NCH (13-0), ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today, rode Walker's early slam to a 17-2 burst to start the game.
It was 21-4 before Taft regrouped and 21-9 after one period.
"I think they were a little stunned," said Walker, who finished with 22 points and five dunks. "We wanted to get out early in the first quarter and take control."
Taft (11-1), ranked No. 2 behind NCH in The Enquirer Divisions II-IV area poll, fought back to make it a game.
But the Senators, despite a few runs, never came closer than an eight-point margin after the early NCH barrage.
Princeton beat Hughes 68-66 in the day's first game at XU. Princeton is No. 7 and Hughes is No. 2 in The Enquirer Division I poll.
Junior guard O.J. Mayo scored 23 points for NCH and had eight rebounds, despite second-half foul trouble. Walker had 22 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore guard Courtney Davis scored 20 for the Trojans. Keenan Ellis, the Trojans' 6-foot-11 junior center, had only three points but had six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Walker, a 6-foot-6 forward rated among the top five juniors nationally by most scouting services, is known for his monstrous dunks.
The 6-foot-5 Mayo, the country's No. 1-ranked junior by most scouts, had three slams of his own.
Walker also drew oohs and aahs by missing three dunk attempts, including one that rocketed off the back rim and bounced out back past halfcourt.
For Taft, junior guard Monsonna Torbert led the way with 22 points.
Senior guard Heath White had 17 points, playing on a slightly injured foot suffered in last Friday's Mount Healthy game. Senior guard Eddie Gray had 16 points for Taft.
NCH coach Jamie Mahaffey credited Taft for battling back.
The Senators got some perimeter shots from Torbert and Gray that drew NCH defenders out a bit, and Taft was able to work inside for a few layups late in the game.
"We got a little complacent and lackadaisical at times, but we still kept our composure and kept our lead out there," Mahaffey said. "It was a great atmosphere with such a big crowd."
Brandon Russ and Tyrone Bradshaw, Taft's pair of 6-foot-8 senior big men, are normally double-figure scorers but were shut out by NCH's sagging man-to-man defense inside.
Russ and Bradshaw both were scoreless and both fouled out, with a combined five rebounds.
"We got ourselves back in the game despite all that, but it's frustrating that everybody didn't play the roles they were supposed to," Taft coach Mark Mitchell said. "North College Hill is very good, and their role players all played their roles."
The game drew a variety of fans and several familiar faces from the college and prep basketball scenes.
Xavier coach Sean Miller and most of his players were on hand, as was former University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins.
Many players and coaches from Cincinnati high schools were in the stands.
NCH downplayed any "Game of the Year" talk, as the Trojans seem to play at least one monster game a week.
NCH victories this year include beating local Division I powers St. Xavier and La Salle, and last weekend's 69-67 win over reigning Division I state champ Canton McKinley.
"It's just another game for us," Walker said, "but it's always good to win."
North College Hill (13-0) - Walker 8 6 22, Mayo 9 3 23, Ellis 1 1 3, Butler 4 0 8, Davis 8 4 20, Leary 1 0 2, Glover 2 0 4. Totals: 33 14 82.
Taft (11-1) - Gray 4 5 16, Torbert 9 0 22, White 6 5 17, Reveals 2 0 5, Kinley 2 2 6, Benton 2 0 4. Totals: 25 12 70.

NCH holds off South Laurel
Tied at break, Trojans win 65-57

FRANKFORT, Ky. - O.J. Mayo sank six free throws during the game's final minute Saturday to spur North College Hill past South Laurel (Ky.) 65-57.

"It was a whole lot closer than I thought," Mayo said.

Mayo finished with 18 points to lead his team.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 19-5 lead, but the Cardinals, the defending Kentucky state champions, outscored North College Hill 25-11 over the next nine minutes to send the game to halftime tied at 30.

A half-court heave at the first-half buzzer could have given South Laurel the lead, but the shot rimmed out.

South Laurel got momentum from a partisan crowd in the second half and, buoyed by Mayo picking up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, was able to build a 43-37 lead when Trey Smith hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

But the Trojans held the Cardinals scoreless over the next six minutes and capped a 12-0 run when Damon Butler made a 3-pointer and then dished off to Courtney Davis for another basket. Butler finished with 10 points and Davis had eight.

The Trojans' athleticism took over down the stretch, and the Cardinals would get no closer than two the rest of the way.

"I think we pulled together as a team," Mayo said of the Trojans.

Keenan Ellis' 6-foot-11 frame was problematic for South Laurel, whose tallest player was Smith at 6-7. Ellis, who scored 14 points, was named MVP for North College Hill, while Smith, who had 16 points and six rebounds, garnered the honor for the Cardinals.

"Going against guys like this, they're so fast and they're up and down the floor, you've got to stay confident and not let them beat you before it starts," Smith said of NCH, ranked No. 2 nationally by USA Today.

NCH's Bill Walker went scoreless in the first half but finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

South Laurel, ranked among the top five teams in Kentucky, shot 7-of-21 on 3-pointers.

The Cardinals got 16 points from Jordan Hammonds and another 12 from Walt Allen.

"We got behind, didn't play well early," said South Laurel coach Steve Wright, who attended Xavier University and got his coaching start at Walton-Verona. "But we fought back. We got a little tired down the stretch."

Mayo, whose varsity high school career started when he played with Walker at Rose Hill Christian Academy at Ashland, said "it was exciting" to be back playing in Kentucky. Their Royals beat South Laurel in the first round of the 2003 Kentucky state tournament.

NCH - Davis 8, Walker 12, Butler 10, Mayo 18, Leary 1, Evans 2, Ellis 14.
SOUTH LAUREL - Proffitt 9, Smith 16, Hammonds 16, Allen 12, Marcum 4.
