After rejecting Tennessee overtures, N.C. State and Dave Doeren agree on new five-year deal

Tennessee’s seemingly never-ending quest to find a new head coach is at least working out well for rumored coaching targets and their wallets.

In the wake of failed overtures to lure Dave Doeren to Knoxville, N.C. State announced on Thursday afternoon that their head coach has instead agreed to a new five-year deal to remain with the Wolfpack for the foreseeable future. The contract, which should take the coach through the 2022 season in Raleigh and is pending board approval, is worth nearly $15 million over the life of the deal.

Doeren, whose birthday comes on Sunday, is 33-30 in five seasons at N.C. State after arriving from Northern Illinois.

“My heart is at NC State, my family and I are truly grateful to Chancellor (Randy) Woodson and Athletic Director Debbie Yow for the opportunity to continue to build on the momentum we have here in Raleigh,” said Doeren in a statement. “We’re building a championship culture, we have first-class facilities, incredible fan support and I’m honored to continue to lead the Wolfpack.”

Sept. 13, 2003: Ohio State’s defense stuffed North Carolina State’s T.A. McLendon on 4th-and-1 at the goal line to preserve a wild 44-38 triple-overtime victory for the Buckeyes Saturday afternoon in front of 104,890 fans at Ohio Stadium. OSU’s Will Allen and A.J. Hawk met McLendon just short of the goal line, ending the first overtime game in stadium history and extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games.

I was at (and remember) that game, it went 3 OTs. Phillip Rivers was the NC State QB. It's probably safe to say he's the only player from that game that is still playing football. We frittered away a 24-7 lead with 11:25 to play. I remember thinking, with the 17 point lead the only we'll lose this game is if we give it away and we almost did. In addition to Holmes' fumbled punt return, Krenzel was also intercepted.

Not sure if he has officially retired after getting cut by the Patriots, but Nuuuuge was still playing as of late 2019.

Disgruntled former player arrested for stalking head coach:

Ex-NC State player arrested for stalking coach Dave Doeren

A former NC State football player was arrested this week and charged with misdemeanor stalking and communicating threats to Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren, according to Wake County records.

The arrest stems from a tweet reportedly sent by Joseph Boletepeli, 22, a member of the 2018 and 2019 NC State football teams, saying, "Imma get him I promise. Dave Doeren and the rest."

The school has not released a statement but confirmed Boletepeli was a member of the football program before transferring to Maryland.
