Because a GT player downed the ball at the 3 just in case his player touched the ball when he got decked before catching the ball. Huge idiotic blown call.
I would last less than one season as a college head coach before I absolutely fucked up a ref in game.

They said the player that hit the returner was pushed into him. There was a nudge, but the flag was iffy.

How was the flag iffy?? If the GT player nudged the Vandy player at all, he was nudging him AWAY from the returner, his position was inside, he could not have pushed the Vandy player toward the returner. The Vandy player then plowed in to the returner, enough to knock him down.

I thought it should have been a penalty. But from a certain angle, the ref could have seen a shove that gave the cover guy more momentum toward the end zone, that may have kept the guy from being able to avoid the returner. The blocker started inside the cover guy, but ended up outside him after the slight contact was made.
Again, I think it was a penalty. And GT has been getting hosed on calls regularly since that play. But I don’t think that play in itself is clear-cut proof of an ‘SEC Ref Fund’ situation.
