Thump: "Waiting for Sloopy45's meltdown any moment now."

No meltdown. Name aside, they're making a 1 year deal offer to someone who would be a platoon 1B/bench player. Not a big deal. If this player's name was Jeff Jones, no one would be making a stink about it.

My "official" Yankee take:
1. I've always been a bit reluctant to see the team get "too" righthanded. Yankee Stadium is built for lefty power, and 4 of their starting 9 are righties - 3 of whom are depended on to make big contributions. So in that regard, I'm a little lukewarm on the offer.

2. Nomar's stats aren't horrible if you prorate them from the 62 games he played: Over 162, his numbers from last year would look like this:

R - 73, H - 170, 2B - 31, HR -24, RBI - 78, BB - 31, AVG - .283, OBP - .320, SLG - .452

Not a bad guy to have off the bench. I'd definately give him a shot with the risk that he can stay relatively healthy. Maybe 110 games? Not impossible ...

All being told, sign him. Its a no-risk, decent-reward proposition for the Yanks.

crazybuckfan40: "Wow a whole infield of all-star shortstops, I wouldnt put it past ole George. Maybe they could bring Renteria into Pitch and Furcal into catch."

Hate it break it to you, but Nomar is far from an All-Star Shortstop anymore. Ernie Banks was an All-Star Shortstop once too, but if the Yanks signed him there wouldn't be this uproar.

As a Yankees fan, i hate the idea. An injury-prone SS with a recently weak bat to go play first base... what about Giambi and how well he did towards the end of the season? What the Yankees need is not purely just more talent, they have enough already, they just need to get chemistry and team unity and not change the roster every year. A new starting pitcher would help but besides that, they have the talent to win a title.... they just need to know how to use it.

Nomar wouldn't play 1B everyday. The Giambino & Nomar would split time at 1B. Some days the line-up would look like this: Giambi - DH, Nomar - 1B, or like this: Sheffield - DH, Giambi - 1B, Nomar - Bench.

If Giambi's healthy, he'll play at least 155 games (at DH or 1B) next season. He won't miss anytime because Nomar is there.

The Yanks need starting & relief pitching. Chemistry is overrated .. the biggest difference between this Yankee team & the Dynasty team is this simple: in the dynasty years, the playoff rotation was these guys: Cone, Pettitte, Wells, El Duque, and Clemens .. all big game pitchers, who always stepped it up a notch in October. And, behind them, they had the Great Mo, Wetteland (for a year), Jeff Nelson, Mike Stanton, Ramiro Mendoza, etc.

They don't have anything close to that, and haven't had it since 2001. Mussina is spotty in the Playoffs, Vazquez was a bust, Kevin Brown is gutless, and Randy Johnson didn't pitch as advertised last season. Not to mention the fact that they have nobody in the 'Pen who can bridge the gap to the Great Rivera.

Signing Nomar is no big deal .. I think Cashman is doing the right thing. He won't block any of the kids from coming up. The best thing that could happen for the Yanks is Melky Cabrera winning one of the open OF slots, and Sean Henn developing into a ML pitcher in '06. The Yanks' front office would be doing cartwheels if that plays out.

The odd thing is that Nomar didn't want to go to Cleveland because he didn't want to paly the Outfield, so I wonder if he wants to platoon/DH in NY... money is a different thing, so we'll see.

I'm just curious as to why the Yankees aren't working harder on the bullpen, as Sloops said... (availability obviously is on thing) but offense isn't a problem on that club... and If they are goign to get dome young kids PT, especially OF's you think that letting Sheff (or the kid) DH would be a place to get some AB's.

Having said all that, a healthy Nomar helps the Yankees... but it seems like getting a platoon 1B/DH is the least of their worries.

Quite simply, there's no Bullpen people out there who're an upgrade over what they have. They thought they could lure B.J. Ryan into the set-up role. Didn't happen. So, they went out and got the best available option as a set-up man in Kyle Farnsworth, and for some reason unbeknownst to me, they signed Mike Myers to a 2 year deal.

Other than that, who's out there that's better than what they have?

Knowing the age of this ballclub, there's no way they can have a set, everyday DH. They need to leave the DH spot wide open and rotate the Giambino, Sheffield, Bernie, (maybe) Nomar and whoever else in that spot when they get dinged up and/or need a rest.

Its not a concern, but the Nomar deal is a win-win all the way for the Yanks. If he pans out, great, if not, no big deal either.

Which is another reason, I'd think they wouldn't put themselves in a position to have to try to get Nomar in the line-up [almost] every day...

SB31: "the Yankees definitely need some serious help with their pitching staff"

Yep. And it aint coming this season. They're going to throw a small fortune at Barry Zito next offseason to get him in the Bronx.
