ScarletBlood31: "An injury-prone SS with a recently weak bat to go play first base... what about Giambi and how well he did towards the end of the season?"
Nomar wouldn't play 1B everyday. The Giambino & Nomar would split time at 1B. Some days the line-up would look like this: Giambi - DH, Nomar - 1B, or like this: Sheffield - DH, Giambi - 1B, Nomar - Bench.
If Giambi's healthy, he'll play at least 155 games (at DH or 1B) next season. He won't miss anytime because Nomar is there.
"What the Yankees need is not purely just more talent, they have enough already, they just need to get chemistry and team unity and not change the roster every year. A new starting pitcher would help but besides that, they have the talent to win a title.... they just need to know how to use it."
The Yanks need starting & relief pitching. Chemistry is overrated .. the biggest difference between this Yankee team & the Dynasty team is this simple: in the dynasty years, the playoff rotation was these guys: Cone, Pettitte, Wells, El Duque, and Clemens .. all big game pitchers, who always stepped it up a notch in October. And, behind them, they had the Great Mo, Wetteland (for a year), Jeff Nelson, Mike Stanton, Ramiro Mendoza, etc.
They don't have anything close to that, and haven't had it since 2001. Mussina is spotty in the Playoffs, Vazquez was a bust, Kevin Brown is gutless, and Randy Johnson didn't pitch as advertised last season. Not to mention the fact that they have nobody in the 'Pen who can bridge the gap to the Great Rivera.
Signing Nomar is no big deal .. I think Cashman is doing the right thing. He won't block any of the kids from coming up. The best thing that could happen for the Yanks is Melky Cabrera winning one of the open OF slots, and Sean Henn developing into a ML pitcher in '06. The Yanks' front office would be doing cartwheels if that plays out.
