NIT Final Four (semi-final): Ohio State 81, Ole Miss 69 (Final)

That might have been the best game I've seen from Evan Turner. He still has issues with the dribble-drive into traffic when there is absolutely nothing there and no one to bail him out, but Ole Miss appeared to have not even bothered including Turner in their game plan. Thankfully, Butler didn't seem to have a problem with it. Turner's rebounds on those two successive foul trips after Ole Miss split FTs as the second half wound down were HUGE.

I'm really going to miss Hunter. He has really upped his game over the last month. Feels like he's leaving right as 'the light' went on for him.

Exactly why I said a few days ago that BJ Mullens coming in would take some of the sting of losing Hunter next season. I know BJ's a great high school player with the potential to be great in college, but one more year at OSU would get Hunter some post season accolades like all conference for example or DPOY the way he's improved. I wouldnt count him out of making someones roster at the next level. He wont get drafted but his work ethic and athletic ability may just net him a paycheck. Having said that, if KK comes back and Mullens comes in the way Hunter leaves, we're in fantastic shape next season.

Thank you for gutting it out all season Jamar. Thursday night is your reward. What an unselfish player and person Jamar is. He gave up the spotlight completely to two freshmen last season when he made all conference the year before, for the betterment of our team. This season he has carried the Bucks on his back until the last month. Tonight he gets hurt and Ole Miss makes a late run until he comes back into the game. The All Time assists leader at Ohio State got a big one at the end of this game tonight.

Kosta Koufos...your time is now my friend. Does he love playing in Madison Square Garden or what?! I really hope he gives us one more season but with the NIT that he's had, hes most likely going to leave. Thanks for this season now finish it off the right way on Thursday!

Evan Turner has finished this season how David Lighty finished last season. I still think he gets out of control on occasion but his athletic ability is soaring on a game by game basis. David Lighty's defense has started to get back to where it should be and his jump shot is improving. Next season this team should be explosive if they can keep from making too many turnovers.

I'll have more to say after Thursday night, but thank you Buckeyes for showing everyone your true colors and the guts you all possess by sticking together after not making the big tourney. Add another banner to the rafters on Thursday night!

I don't really see the point of that argument. It's not a possibility.

I think B.J. is more developed than you give him credit for. Hunter has been great the last 7 games or so but he was almost non-existent for most of the year. If we're making predictions, I think B.J.'s production next year will be superior to Hunter's this year. Now, Butler is going to be very hard to replace.

after the game, i yelled to Kosta Koufos "1 MORE GAME" he looked at me and nodded his head...but hopefully Kosta will play more than one more game for Ohio State....

the buckeyes really tore it up tonight
it just so happens that the first time i see this team play in person, just may have been one of the best games they have played...

11 blocks!
10 plus steals!

hunter must have had 5 or six blocks
butler was shooting from the NBA 3, and cashed one...i yelled"HE'S READY TO GO"

after hunter dunked it on a pick and roll from butler, i screamed, "PUT HIM ON THE KNICKS" alot of the new yorkers got a kick out of that.

watching eric wallace in warmups is a treat.

evan turner is so good with the basketball, he makes the game loos so easy

i dont think diebler scored...but nick calathis sucked too...maybe it was a bad night to wear #33

what a great night for me though..the ohio state guys are really nice kids..thad matta is nice too, i as he was comin out for the second half and as he was going in at the end of the game i made a few comments in his direction and he looked at me and gave me a big smile both times...

i love the college atmosphere...especially in a place like MSG...looks like ill be goin back on thursday!

It wasnt an argument. I was agreeing with Dryden about the way Hunter has developed. Had he come in as a freshman maybe he would have progressed that much further. Do all comments have to have a point?

Production doesnt just come in the form of statistics either. Hunters leadership will be missed as much as his game.

The only bad thing about them playing well is that it increases the chances the Koufos will leave, which I think were almost certain anyway. Had we been knocked out of the NIT early, I think he may have been more likely to want to stick around a year and look better with Mullins at the post.

A great game, that I missed, in which we out-rebounded the great rebounders. Boy, these kids must be kicking themselves as they see what they can do, admittedly not against the top five but good teams nonetheless.

Really liked what I saw out of PJ today. He looked confident when he was out on the floor, hoisting a three and he attacked the basket well with a couple of nice drives. I think with one more offseason to improve his outside shot and try to slow the game down a bit, he can be very effective as our PG next season, whether starting or as a backup. His quickness is very impressive.

KK has made a lot of money this NIT by showing off that beautiful 12-16 ft baseline jumper. If he gets teamed with a PG who is effective at the drive and dish (backing up David West, anyone?) then he could have a very long and prosperous career in the pros.

Lighty looks so much more confident on the offensive end right now. He isn't afraid to get into the lane, even if it is just to bring it right back out. We are finally doing something besides running the 3 man weave.

Hope Jamar is good to go for the finals. That blow-by layup at the end was pure heart.

Buckeyes take out Ole Miss Ohio State will play UMass, not Florida, in championship game
Published on Wednesday, Apr 02, 2008

Associated Press

NEW YORK: Ohio State will get another chance to wrap up its season with a title, though not quite the one the Buckeyes had in mind when fall practice started.
Hey, at least they don't have to mess with Florida this time.
Jamar Butler and Evan Turner scored 17 points each, and the Buckeyes used a buckling halfcourt trap and an early 14-0 run to beat Mississippi 81-69.
Ohio State (23-13) will play Massachusetts in the championship Thursday night, after the Minutemen knocked off Florida and allowed a small but vocal contingent of Buckeye fans to breath a little easier before their game even began.
The Gators have been their nemesis for the past 18 months, romping over Ohio State to win the 2007 BCS National Championship Game and then knocking off Greg Oden and the Buckeyes at the Final Four in Atlanta for a second straight basketball title.

I like the notion that our big men will hold their own pretty much (as far as rebounds go) KK will be the highest-SCORING big man, period, and our guards will out-athlete the rest of the squad.

tOSU: 77 to 66.

On to UMass!

Go Bucks!!
I wasn't far off with the score, and KK was the leading big man.

But I didn't predict Butler's injury... hope he's okay.

And Diebler has all summer to get over his yips...

Great game by Matta, Turner, Hunter, Lighty, and the new Special K.

Go Bucks!

Ohio State's David Lighty, left, gets off a shot against Mississippi's Patrick Spach.

NEW YORK?Ohio State upheld its end of the deal. Florida didn't.
Not that it mattered to the Buckeyes tonight.
What mattered to them was that they won their semifinal in the National Invitation Tournament and will play for the championship Thursday night against Massachusetts, which upset Florida in the other semifinal 78-66.
Ohio State used full-court pressure and traps to force 19 Mississippi turnovers and score 28 points off them on the way to a 81-69 victory in the second game of the doubleheader in Madison Square Garden.
The storybook ending to the tournament had the Buckeyes playing Florida for the championship almost a year to the day after they decided the NCAA championship last season last April 2 in Atlanta. It was not to be.
The Buckeyes (23-13) led by 27 points early in the second half but let Ole Miss get as close as seven points in the final two minutes before winning their fourth straight game since being snubbed by the NCAA Tournament.
Jamar Butler and Evan Turner scored 17 points apiece and Kosta Koufos and David Lighty had 16 each to lead Ohio State, which will play UMass at 7 p.m. Thursday for the championship. The game will be televised by ESPN.

No second helpings for Ole Miss

Rebounding was a priority as the Buckeyes prepared to play Mississippi in an NIT semifinal in Madison Square Garden last night. The Rebels led the Southeastern Conference in rebounding and offensive rebounding, an area in which the Buckeyes were exploited throughout the season.
They weren?t expolited in their 81-69 win over Ole Miss. The Rebels got four offensive rebounds, no second-chance points and were outrebounded 31-14 overall in falling behind 44-20 at the half.
They finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds, four second-chance points and were outrebounded 50-37 by Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a season-high 20 offensive rebounds and at least 50 overall for only the second time; they had 55 against Virginia Military Institute in November.
?It was just our mentality. Everybody went to the boards as much as possible,? David Lighty said. ?We stressed that a lot during the week in practice and I think we came out and showed that we can be a good rebounding team if we put our minds to it.?
