Nintendo Rethinks the Game Controller

Nintendo Co. Ltd. will offer a game controller with its upcoming Revolution games console that is drastically different from those used in previous consoles.
The controller looks a little like a television remote control and will allow people to play games with just one hand, said Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo during a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, which opened on Friday near Tokyo.
The unit mixes buttons and motion sensors so games can be controlled through a combination of pressing buttons and also waving the controller around in the air.
Simulations of the controller being used in a number of different games were shown during a video shown at the keynote. It was swung in a baseball game as someone would swing a bat, stabbed into space to kill imaginary bugs as someone might use a fly swatter and swung from side to side to control a tennis game on screen.
<!-- image --> There’s an add-on unit, connected via a short cable to the main unit. It was simulated being used in a first-person shooter game, of the type that’s very popular in the U.S. The main controller was held in the hand and pointed while the secondary controller was held in the other hand and became the gun’s trigger.
The new style controller is part of Nintendo’s drive to expand the gaming population and Iwata said he hopes it will be less intimidating for non-gamers to pick up.
“In order to realize the goal of creating a new starting line that anyone can instinctively understand we have come up with a design that differs greatly from any of today’s controllers,” said Iwata. “We have also made bold innovations in play style as well.”
“At the heart of this controller is a brand new sensor which we call the direct pointing device,” he said. “This allows Revolution to detect precisely the location on the screen that the controller is pointing. With this technology you can not only point at a location intuitively but it can also detect the distance from the screen and even the angle of the controller.”
Nintendo’s already made innovations in the portable gaming space with its Nintendo DS console, which features two LCD (liquid crystal displays) one of which is touch-sensitive.
The Nintendo DS, which was launched at the end of last year, has been selling well, Iwata said. Sales in Japan to the end of August, about nine months after its launch, were 3 million units, he said. In particular the device has succeeded in getting new people into gaming or attracting people back to the pastime, he said.
Iwata’s speech came three days after the company launched its latest portable gaming device, the GameBoy Micro. The device went on sale in Japan on Tuesday and has been selling well, he said.
“The Famicon version, which looks like a Famicon controller, appears to be most popular,” he said referring to Nintendo’s first TV game console. “It’s already out of stock in some shops but we are ready to make additional shipments next week.”
The GameBoy Micro will go on sale in the U.S. market on Sept. 19 and will cost $100.

 
Oh my god is that the new controller? *pukes*

I mean, come on! That controller looks more confusing that the x-box and Dreamcast controllers combined! I love the GCN controller and I think that they should stick with it. The Playstation's controllers are staying the same even though it's evolved into what I've seen is the new PS3. What the hell is Nintendo thinking? Just keep the GCN controller and we're all good.

I like to PC play, but I'd rather use a controller, that's what I'm used to.

Has anyone bothered to actually read the article? The idea is to simplify the controller by using motion sensors to move objects within the game...it will not complicate things as many of you fear. No longer will you have to press buttons to swing a sword or aim a gun, you simply point to control movement (how this will work in Madden, I have no idea).

The new controller, if it catches on will revolutionize game play as we know it by simplifying the process and making games more interactive. The big question is whether or not the side-results of the simplification will work. For example, I am a huge Legend of Zelda fan, but I don't really know if I want to swing the controller all over the place in order to get Link to swing his sword. One, I would feel stupid; and two, I like to lay on the couch in a relaxed position when I play video games. However, perhaps the increased interaction with the game will actually make it more enjoyable and override these concerns. Experiencing it will be the only way to know.

Plus, holding your arm up and swinging it around would definitely grow tiring.
I would be willing to try it, but not sure how its going to work.

It worked so well for Dreamcast... a great system killed by an ugly controller.

I liked that controller except for the stupid cord coming out the bottom (of course at 6'8'' I have big hands). I always thought what killed the Dreamcast was it was brought out to fast and didn't include DVD technology which left it dead in the water from the beginning.

Yes, a remote control will intimidate people. I sell universal remotes at work, and even young people have trouble figuring the damn things out. You're overestimating the intelligence of the American public.
