  • FLORENCE, AZ -- An accident on State Route 79 south of Phoenix killed nine people and injured nine others on Thursday morning, according to Department of Public Safety officer Carmen Figueroa.

The accident has closed the highway about 20 miles south of Florence.

As many as 18 people were in a GMC SUV when it went off the road just north of Tom Mix Monument, said Figueroa.

WTF? 18 People riding in one SUV? :shake: Why do I get the feeling most if not all the passengers were illegals? I feel wrong speculating that, but I can't help it...

I had a feeling something bad would happen once they outgrew the convertible. :(

    Update:

    Charges filed in fatal rollover

Mexican accused of transporting illegal immigrants

Seventeen suspected illegal immigrants jammed inside an SUV that rolled on a rural highway southeast of Phoenix last week had crossed the desert on foot for two days before being picked up for the second leg of their journey, two of the survivors reportedly told authorities.
Two men who had served as guides for the border crossers reportedly boarded the sport-utility vehicle with the group; one of them, 32-year-old Brian Guzman-Ochoa, was identified as the suspected driver, a Mexican national who authorities said had been arrested at least three previous times for human smuggling.
Nine people died and 10 were hurt, some seriously, in the 7:45 a.m. rollover early Thursday in Pinal County near Florence.
Guzman-Ochoa told authorities after the crash that he did not know how to drive but did so anyway, according to a criminal complaint released by the U.S. Attorney's Office on Tuesday.
He also said he did not know what happened because he suffers from epileptic seizures, the document said.
Guzman-Ochoa has been charged with one count of transporting illegal immigrants.
The Hermosillo, Sonora, man faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.

He denied being the driver, telling authorities he was in the front passenger's seat holding the steering wheel after the driver saw police.
Later, he said that he was the driver despite not knowing how to drive.
Guzman-Ochoa also told authorities he suffered from epileptic seizures and did not know what happened before the crash.
An investigation later determined that Guzman-Ochoa had been arrested four times and apprehended several other times.
