He's just a kid and that stuff happens. But what's up with his coach saying they'd forfeit the games rather than play without him? I don't think that sets a very good example to the rest of the team. These are impressionable young men who need to know that whether the refs screwed up or not, you still don't have the right to be a poor sport. And if you do lose your head a little, there are consequences. That's too bad there.

Standing on the field after the final whistle, Nick O'Leary flashed a wide grin.

"It felt unbelievable, man," he said about his first game in three weeks. "It was fun."

Returning after a two-game suspension and a bye week, O'Leary fit right in.

The senior accounted for three touchdowns in the first half - a catch, a run and a Wildcat pass - in No. 2 Dwyer's 41-15 win over Atlantic.

Dwyer's talented trio of Nick O'Leary, Jacoby Brissett and Curt Maggitt is headed to Madison, Wis., this weekend to take an official visit to Wisconsin when the No. 18 Badgers play host to No. 1 Ohio State.

Coach Jack Daniels' Panthers, the defending Class 4A state champions, are loaded again this year with major-college prospects. Second-ranked Dwyer is off to a 4-1 start after defeating Palm Beach Lakes 62-6 Friday, with its only loss coming in a controversial finish vs. Cleveland Glenville in Ohio on Labor Day.

O'Leary, who at 6 feet 4 and 225 pounds, is widely considered the top tight end prospect in the nation, said the Panthers are starting to come together after tweaking a few missing parts due to graduation losses.

"I feel that we're just as good as last year," O'Leary said. "We don't have as many athletes as we had last year. But we're picking it up on the O-line now, cutting down on penalties and hopefully we can win another state championship."

Offensively, quarterback Jacoby Brissett makes Dwyer go. The 6-4, 230-pounder, who is also one of the top basketball prospects in the state, threw for three touchdowns against Lakes as Dwyer amassed 546 yards of total offense.

This week Dwyer will play host to Class 6A power Park Vista (4-1) on Thursday night.

"I think we're getting a lot better," Brissett said. "A lot more players are stepping up. We are being able to throw the ball around to our receivers, getting into our plays. I think our line is coming along ? they've come so far since the first game we played together."

All three plan to take all of their official visits before making a decision.

The trio checked out Florida State unofficially; visited Tuscaloosa, Ala., the weekend of Oct. 2 for the Crimson Tide's victory over Florida; has Wisconsin this weekend; and will be in Baton Rouge, La., the first weekend in November for 'Bama at LSU.

"That's the three [official visits] I've set so far," said Maggitt, a 6-4, 220-pound defensive end. "I'm definitely going to take all five, and I'm thinking probably Georgia [will get a visit]. But I haven't really decided yet. I'm just keeping it wide open still."

"I have no clue yet," added O'Leary, on who will get his final two official visits.

ESPN national recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg believes FSU is the front-runner to land O'Leary, and says if there is a No. 2 it's probably Alabama. Coach Daniels has gone on the record that he believes O'Leary will end up in Tallahassee as well.

As for when an announcement might come?

O'Leary said: "I am either going to do it in the Army [All-American] Game or just before then." Maggitt intends to declare his intentions the day after Christmas on a friend's television show. Brissett? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

Among other Dwyer players with Division I-A offers: defensive tackle Keith Bowers (6-1, 260) has offers from Maryland, FIU and FAU, among others, with interest from Illinois and Kansas State; cornerback/wide receiver Darrell Hunter (5-11, 175) has been offered by Bowling Green, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Buffalo and Cincinnati, with interest from Maryland; and junior Bobby Puyol (5-11, 165) is one of the top kicking prospects in the South.

Wisconsin seems to be a long shot to land the three Dwyer standouts, but don't count out the Badgers. Head coach Bret Bielema recruited South Florida as an assistant coach at Iowa and assistant coach Charlie Partridge is a native of Plantation.

This schedule is about girls volleyball, lacrosse and soccer as much as the football games of his one grandson (Nick O'Leary) who happens to be the No. 1-rated high school tight end in the country and an ultra-prized big-time college recruit. Nicklaus isn't shy in saying that Nick's "not going to Ohio State", his alma mater, which made the mistake of telling Nicklaus' grandson that he'd have to switch positions if he went there. It's clear that the six-time Masters winner is pulling for Florida State, even as he insists he won't have any influence on the decision.

To hear Nicklaus tell it, Nick is too stubborn for that. He explains how his grandson rebuffs even his own mother's trickiest attempts at finding out his college choice.

"He's like, 'I'm not telling you.' To his mother ... " Nicklaus laughs, clearly pleased by his grandson's pluckiness.

Jack Nicklaus is an Ohio State man through and through. He won an NCAA title for the university in 1961, dotted the "i" on the football field in 2006 with the school's famed marching band, and an on-campus museum bears his name. Oh yeah, he was born and raised in the Columbus area.

But if his alma mater's football team advances to the BCS Championship Game and faces Florida State, which is currently the only team ahead of the Buckeyes in the BCS standings, Nicklaus will be tomahawk-chopping and chanting with the Seminoles fans. And it has nothing to do with the fact that he also has a home in Florida.

"I'm an Ohio State guy, but blood is thicker than anything else," Nicklaus said Sunday night.

That would be a reference to his grandson, Nick O'Leary, who is a star tight end for Florida State. The junior has hauled in seven touchdown receptions this year, tied for second in the nation among tight ends.

O'Leary will miss this season after suffering a heart attack

In late May, the Las Vegas Raiders placed tight end Nick O'Leary on the Reserve/NFI list. At the time, many thought he was hanging up the cleats for good, but O'Leary revealed on Monday that he was dealing with a serious heart issue that put his career in jeopardy. According to the Palm Beach Post, O'Leary had surgery to clear 100 percent blockage to the heart last month, but is expected to make a full recovery and is hoping he can resume his football career next season. O'Leary underwent an angioplasty on May 19 -- one of two procedures he had to correct this issue.

"I feel good," O'Leary said. "I feel better than I did before. I've got to be on blood thinners for six months to a year. That's really the only reason now why I can't play football. If I (got cut), they said that would be the biggest problem, wouldn't be able to stop the bleeding."

O'Leary was working out when he felt a sharp pain in his left arm that moved to his chest, and it was a pain that came back again while he was playing pickleball with his brother.

"I said sarcastically to my brother there's something wrong with my heart, I don't know what it is," O'Leary said. "I happened to go to the hospital, and they told me it was a heart attack."
