I love hockey and am a poor NY Rangers fan.
I'm glad to see the Lightning in the finals though. They've built the team the right way. Through the draft and a couple of old crafty vets.

I hope Nieminen gets at least a one game suspension, that hit at the end of Game 4 was a deliberate attempt to take out Vinny. For all of the talk about this being a high flying, fast skating series, it sure has turned into a slugfest. Maybe if they called a third of the holding and interference infractions (Calgary is notorious for using picks away from the action to free up Iginla) there would be more action and perhaps even better ratings...

Holding and that freakin' trap has really hurt the game.
I can't see a suspension, even if it may be what he deserves.
The NHL will not make a comment on it and then after the finals are over they will decide that he needs the one game suspension and announce that he is to sit out the first game of next season.

I agree with you concerning watching the game at the arenas. It is a totally different experience. We only attend one game or two at the most every year. When the Rangers come to Detroit, or Columbus or Pittsburgh, we'll travel there to watch them and try to get as close to the Ice as possible.
To sit right up on the glass and to to see some one get crushed right in front of you gives you a real appreciation of the physical play of the game.
I'll never forget seeing Peter Nedved getting smashed into the glass right in frony of me in Pittsburgh. My son said I even jumped about a foot off my seat!

Word is down, and he indeed is suspended for the next game. Unlike MLB, the NHL acts swiftly on infractions.

I think the 2 referee system catches alot more of those penalties that Mili was referring to.

Fighting is not a problem at all in the NHL. It serves a very good purpose and is very well controlled by the league rules. The old days of hockey had multiple fights all over the ice, as well as players jumping in from the bench. Those days are over and rarely are there multiple fights on the ice at the same time. Goons fight other goons, it's as simple as that. I'm not sure, but I would guess the average fighting major per game is below one. You'll never see guys like, say Mili, that would pick a fight with someone like Brettgoblow.

I think the suspension is fair - he's a repeat offender in the playoffs (he got another one game suspension for ramming into Detroit's goalie) so any kind of hit like that is deserving of the penalty. Calgary's style of play is everything that's wrong with hockey, I'd like to see the NHL change over to the Olympic size ice sheet to try to open up the game more. It's pretty obvious where my allegiances are, who are you guys pulling for in this series?

I live down here, and the Lightning are the only pro team I've been able to adopt as my own. Can't stand the Bucs (Browns fan to the core here), the Rays are worthless, but you gotta love the Lightning. Plus, its a lot easier to adopt a team when your employer hooks you up with four terrific seats every other week or so. As far as Vinny is concerned, he said in a press conference yesterday that he felt fine and would be playing tonight.

Well, it's good to talk to other hockey fans. The problem with being in North central Ohio is that there just isn't any hockey fans to talk to. There is one guy I work with that loves the game but I rarely get a chance to talk with him at length.
I picked the game up in the early 90's. I liked it, but not understanding all the rules and not growing up with it as I did all the other major sports made it not as much fun to watch. So I decided to do a lot of research and as soon as I learned all about the game it became a lot of fun. I now love it.

I became a Rangers fan simply because they were the Cleveland Indians of the NHL at that time. They hadn't won a championship in 40 years. They were also on TV a lot. A couple years after that(94') they finally won the cup. I've been losing with them ever since.
My favorite memory is getting to take my son to see the great one play before he retired.

I'll admit to being a huge hockey fan, albeit a rookie hockey fan. I scored tickets to a Columbus Blue Jackets game early this past season, and as a result I attended 8 more games and watch hockey on TV whenever possible (which really isn't all that often). I never paid any attention to it before, but after such a great experience at the arena, I really started to pay attention, and picked up a lot of the rules. I have found that it is significantly easier to watch on TV and follow the puck after watching several games in person at the arena. I am now a huge CBJ fan (even though they're horrible), and I think it is absolutely amazing what someone like Zerdev can do on the ice. I'm still pretty illiterate when it comes to knowing the history and other team's rosters, but I'm getting there pretty quickly.

FKA - dont' feel like you have to admit to being a hockey fan. I'll openly state that hockey is my second favorite sport (my favorite being the obvious.) I wish I had been able to play in HS, I bet it's a lot of fun to fly around on skates and bash some other guy into the boards fighting for the puck. My Lightning let me down last night, but they aren't out of it yet. I may have to bust out the undefeated Rose Bowl t-shirt for saturday nights game (the shirt I wore to the 97 Rose Bowl - my team is undefeated when I wear it.) Like I said in another thread, TB has alternated wins and losses for the last 11 games so its their turn to win for Game 6...

Game 7 tonight at 8 in the St. Pete Times Forum. I hope you guys all watched game 6 on Saturday, that was a great game. I'm not quite the hockey guru, but the controversial third period goal sure looked like a kick to me (from inside the crease no less), does anyone know the official rule on kicking motion?

I missed game six but will not miss game 7. I hope the pattern of alternating wins does continue tonight.
I do not know how the rule reads but from my understanding The player has to make a clear kicking motion for it to be a kicking violation.
If the foot is still or simply moving in any direction without an actual kicking motion then I believe no infraction will be whistled.
I missed it and haven't watched Sportscenter. What happened?

You missed game 6??? That's too bad, it was clearly the best game of the series. The score was tied 2-2 with about 6 minutes left in the third, and Gelinas rushed the net hard on a rebound. He put on the brakes and his skidding skate deflected the puck at the right boot of Khabibulin - he kicked it out and it was cleared, but one of the angles made it look like the puck had crossed the line. However, it was in the air on its side and the angle that made it look like a goal was from center ice, the overhead directly over the goal was inconclusive. To me, it sure looked like he intended to direct the puck with his skidding skate...

My daughter had a fastpitch tourney. We didn't get home untill 9:30 Sunday evening.
If he didn't make a clear kicking motion then it is a goal. I think the NHL believes that is unfair to assume he intended to direct the puck without the kicking motion being involved.

Were there any fisticuffs?
