Ovechkin returning for 22nd season with Capitals on 1-year deal

Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's career leader in goals, has decided to return for the 2026-27 season, his 22nd with the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals announced Thursday that Ovechkin has signed a one-year contract with an AAV of $4.25 million.

Ovechkin -- who led the Capitals to the Stanley Cup in 2018 -- announced he would decide on his future this offseason after consulting with his family and the Capitals. He was in the final season of his contract which carried a $9.5 million cap hit.

Ovechkin's new deal carries a $1 million base salary and a $3.25 million signing bonus. However, he will earn an additional $4.75 million bonus if he plays at least 10 games, which would increase his total salary to $9 million.

This past season Ovechkin had 32 goals and 32 assists, playing all 82 games for the Capitals in his 21st NHL season. He finished the season with 929 career goals in 1,573 games, having passed Wayne Gretzky last year for the most regular-season goals in NHL history.

Between that and the stupid Leo Carlsson offer sheet, the NHL has lost its damn mind and I'm here for it
Anaheim matched. That was an impossible position to be placed in for them. In a few years, that contract might not look that awful as the cap keeps rising, but for now they have to make Carlsson the highest paid player in the game and he's never scored more than 70 pts in a season. They better hope he becomes a consistent 90-100 point guy, and I'm not sure he does.

Totally gums up their spending capability and they're gonna have to pay Gauthier, too, soon. Plus they have to cobble together a blue line. I'm not sure I wouldn't have taken the 4 firsts.

Moral of the story - lock up your young core early and don't be a jackass negotiating.

Avalanche's Makar agrees to record deal worth $20.4 annually

Cale Makar has agreed to an eight-year extension with the Colorado Avalanche that will make him the highest-paid player in NHL history.

The deal carries a $20.4 million average annual value. He is the first player in league history to make at least $20 million per season. The max a player could make, per percentage of the salary cap, is $20.8 million.

Makar, 27, has been a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman for six consecutive seasons.

Wild's Michael McCarron apparently slips a fan $20 through a hole in the glass

Michael McCarron apparently handed a fan $20 through a hole in the glass Saturday, after knocking over the guy's beer earlier in the night.

No camera crew, no press release. Just a quick fix for a ruined drink, slipped through the glass like a tip left on a diner counter.

That fan will tell this story for the rest of his life. Most people leave a game with a puck if they're lucky, and this guy left with a refund.

It's also very hockey. The sport's reputation for players with real class away from the spotlight gets built on moments exactly like this one.

And it came from McCarron, of all people. He's the big, physical forward who's supposed to make life miserable for opponents.

The biggest, toughest guys in this league are so often the softest touch off the ice. This was one more reminder.

The game itself went Minnesota's way, a 5-1 win in Seattle. McCarron logged 15:11 and took a minor penalty.
