I remember the lead up to the draft for McDavid being all about how he's a franchise changing player. Crosby level or better. I don't think I ever heard of Draisaitl until he was dominating the league. Where did he come from? Was I just oblivious or did everyone know he was this good and that this pairing was coming?

He was picked 3rd overall, so he was well regarded, though that 2014 draft was pretty weak. He was a top-6 guy by his second year and has just steadily improved. I think the feeling was he'd be a pretty damn good player, but not THIS good.

People thought his skating would hold him back if I remember correctly.. He was well regarded, but I don’t remember anyone saying he could be an elite offensive force to this degree.

His skating still isn't great, but he might be the best passer in the league and when he's on he can score goals almost at will. Just freaky and he's often overshadowed by McJesus...which, yeah, who wouldn't be?
