TRIVIA: First NHL goal credited to a goaltender
Smith was the first NHL goaltender to be credited with scoring a goal. On November 28, 1979, in a game between the Islanders and the Colorado Rockies, the Rockies' goaltender left the ice for an extra attacker after a delayed penalty call was called on the Islanders. The puck deflected off of Smith's chest protector into the corner. Rockies rookie Rob Ramage picked up the puck and accidentally made a blind pass from the corner boards in the opposing zone to the blue line. Nobody was there to receive the pass, and so the puck sailed all the way down the length of the ice and into the Rockies' net. As Smith had been the last Islanders player to touch the puck, he was credited with the goal.

Report: NHL discussing plan that could restart season in July

The NHL could become the first of the four major North American professional sports leagues to resume play in 2020 amid the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis. According to Fox Sports Radio's Andy Slater, Florida Panthers president Matthew Caldwell revealed in a conference call on Wednesday that the league is discussing a plan that could result in the season being restarted in July.

Per Caldwell, the NHL's plan, if it comes to fruition, would tentatively include games being played at "four or five" neutral sites. Spectators would either be limited or completely barred from attending the games.

The above path to resuming the season has not been finalized, per the report.

The 2019-2020 NHL season has been on hiatus since March 12, one day after the NBA became the first major North American professional sports league to suspend its season due to the COVID-19 crisis. Virtually all other major professional leagues and college athletic conferences have halted play in the time since. Within the NHL, multiple unnamed players on the Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche were reported to have tested positive for the virus earlier this spring.

While the potential return of the NHL in July would be considered a massive step forward in getting the games across all sports back underway, it wouldn't be the first sport to resume major competitions within the U.S. if that timetable is met. The PGA Tour announced earlier this month that it would -- barring unforeseen circumstances -- resume tournaments in mid-June, starting with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

The report of hockey's potential return comes just days after NHL great Wayne Gretzky said he believes the league can resume its season at some point this summer.

"I really believe somehow, someway, that the leadership in this country and in Canada, that we're going to figure this out," Gretzky said. "And I really believe that we'll see hockey and some sort of other sports in June, July and August, albeit in a different way, but I really see it coming to fruition. I think it's going to happen.

"Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm too optimistic. I think I'm not. I hope that that's a good sign for everyone that we're moving on in life, in business, in sports. I really see in the next couple months something good happening.”

Amazon buys naming rights to KeyArena, will call it Climate Pledge Arena

Amazon has purchased the KeyArena naming rights, but an unprecedented sports-world twist will see the venue become known as Climate Pledge Arena rather than using the company’s name.

The arena, home to the city’s incoming NHL franchise and WNBA’s Storm, will be powered 100% by renewable electricity when it opens by late-summer 2021 and seek to achieve a zero-carbon footprint. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos broke the news Thursday on Instagram.

NHL reportedly to begin 2020-21 season on Dec. 1

TSN reported on Wednesday night that as part of the memorandum of understanding between the NHL and NHL Players’ Association for the return-to-play format/Collective Bargaining Agreement that must still be ratified by the league’s Board of Governors and the NHLPA’s full membership, the 2020-21 season will tentatively begin on Dec. 1.

The first round of the 16-team playoffs will begin on Aug. 9. The conference finals will begin on Sept. 6 and the last possible game of the Stanley Cup Final will be on Oct. 2.

The offseason will be very compact.

The NHL Draft is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 6 and the free agency period will begin either on Oct. 9 or seven days after the conclusion of the Cup Final, whichever is later. Under the new CBA guidelines, there no longer will be a five-day interview period for unrestricted free agents prior to the free agent market opening.

Training camps for the 2020-21 season are then scheduled to open on Nov. 17.
