NFL Players' Union Opposes HGH Test

Report: NFL proposes HGH blood test again; players' union is against idea - ESPN

"At this point, there's no reason to believe that blood-testing for NFL players will or should be implemented," George Atallah, union assistant executive director of external affairs, told The Post. "We should instead focus on preserving the drug-testing policy that we have in place."

We know the league's motivation (transparency). What I don't understand is the union's motivation (protection of players from having a needle stuck in their arm? protecting them from getting caught cheating? both?).

The league and the player's association have alot of animosity between each other, this is an example of the player's association posturing in order to make it understood that they will not be pressed upon for anything.

The relationship between the two is one of the worst that I know of in professional sports.

I'm sure motivation is protection from getting caught, sure. But one legit reason is false positives. This is a new form of testing and HGH hasn't been detectable before now. False positives are a legitimate concern IMO.

That being said, I know absolutely nothing about this.

Without reading the article, I'm all but certain the motivation from the players side will be couched in constitutional terms. Of course, the NFL isn't the Gov so it's really more for effect...but.. I figure that's the "public face" of why they don't want blood tests.
