NFL Notebook: Packers' Diggs out with injury
Cardinals sign first-round draft pick

Wednesday, August 10, 2005
By The Associated Press

Green Bay Packers linebacker Na'il Diggs has a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss at least two weeks.

Diggs left practice Monday on a cart after a pileup during 11-on-11 team drills. An MRI exam yesterday confirmed the slight tear.

General manager Ted Thompson was somewhat relieved by the diagnosis.

"I don't think it's serious," Thompson said. "The good news is it's not a worst-case scenario."

With Diggs out and potential replacement Raynoch Thompson missing both practices to rest a swollen knee, the Packers' No. 1 linebacker unit consisted of Hannibal Navies on the weak side, Nick Barnett in the middle and Paris Lenon on the strong side.

Cardinals

Antrel Rolle, the kind of aggressive, physical defender coveted by Arizona coach Dennis Green, agreed to a six-year contract with the team. Financial terms were not immediately available, but Rolle, the No. 8 pick in April, was taken between wide receiver Troy Williamson and cornerback Carlos Rogers. Williamson signed a deal with Minnesota that could be worth up to $32 million over five years, including $13.3 million in guaranteed money. Rogers got a five-year, $17.45 million contract from Washington.

Eagles

Philadelphia wide receiver Terrell Owens missed practice for the fourth time in five days because of a left groin injury. Owens is day to day, and the injury isn't considered serious. He has had groin problems in the past. Owens sat out practices Friday and Saturday. He returned Sunday for both the morning and afternoon sessions but hasn't been on the field since.

Owens is unhappy the Eagles have refused to redo his contract as he enters the second season of a seven-year, $48.97 million deal.

Wide recever Todd Pinkston had surgery in Philadelphia to repair a ruptured Achilles' tendon. Pinkston was injured Friday and put on injured reserve Monday.

Cowboys

Jacob Rogers, making a strong bid to be the starting offensive right tackle, missed practice while having an MRI on his sore left shoulder. The exam found no major problems in the shoulder on which Rogers had offseason surgery. Rogers struggled as rookie last season trying to adjust to left tackle and saw only limited time on special teams in two games. After the Cowboys drafted Pitt's Rob Pettiti this year, Rogers was moved back to the right side.

Saints

Offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb's right knee was injured in practice.

"He was in a goal-line situation and he just twisted it. It's bad," coach Jim Haslett said.

Stinchcomb was taken to a hospital for further examination. More should be known today about the injury. Stinchcomb, a second-round draft choice from Georgia two years ago who has played very little, was pushing 12-year veteran Wayne Gandy to start at left tackle.

Broncos

Maurice Clarett missed another practice while he had an MRI on his sore right groin. He has missed several of Denver's training camp practices with injuries. He was listed fifth at running back on the depth chart released this week by the Broncos.

Rams

Cornerback Dwight Anderson, who had been competing for a nickel back job, was released for violating team rules. Anderson was one of two undrafted rookies to spend the entire season with the Rams last year.
