  • I'm pleased to announce that an Ohio Buckeye tree will be planted in front of my house in mid-April! I just got off the phone with the City Forester, and it turns out they have Buckeye trees available in our 'street tree' program. Sadly, the flowering crabapple tree we have now is about dead (fire blight and a bad graft), which has prompted me to investigate a replacement. Since the tree is in the City Right-of-Way (between the sidewalk and the street), it's their responsibility. Anyway, the Forester told me they take requests, so I thought I'd see whether Buckeyes were a viable option, and indeed they are!

I'm really excited to be getting a Buckeye tree and thought I'd share.

Oh, does anyone have any good fall foliage pics of Buckeye trees to share?

Don't tell we where you live or I might have to bring my chainsaw.

Make sure you get the Aesculus glabra, that's the Ohio Buckeye. Not the Aesculus hipporcastanum, that's a Horse Chestnut. I checked, both are pretty well adapted to your area. And get a pellet gun, squirrels like Buckeyes, a lot!

There is an arboretum near our house, and I found a Buckeye tree there (all the trees are labels with tags). I was so excited! There is also one in the cemetery near my house. I almost twisted my ankle on the buckeyes that had dropped on the ground before I realized what they were.

Proving once again that Buckeyes show great tackling form - even when on the ground.
