New Sports Illustrated poll on top rivalries in college football (merged)

I don't even know how they can consider the Texas-Oklahoma that great of a rivalry when it is no longer a matter of who will win, but how badly Texas will lose. Then again, with Coop, we weren't so hot against the scUMmers. But still, there should be no one NEAR OSU/scUM in that poll. :)
Maybe its just me but I would put army/navy game on a different level than all of them. That game is the only game that i can watch even when both teams are terrible. After that I would put The Game and then the RRS/ iron bowl. The rest of those games shouldn't even be on the list.

i dont care how many MNC are won over there, I refuse to aknowledge that football is played in the state of California

I don't think I ever cared about Army/Navy. Maybe it was a good game back during/right after WWII, but not anymore. I don't care if a crappy Army team beats a crappy Navy team. I'd rather watch a crappy Akron team beat a crappy Buffalo team, or something.

The fact that you don't know anyone on either team is what makes the game so great. These kids are playing because they love to play football. They are almost never on tv and are almost certainly not going to be in the NFL. Actually when they graduate(which almost all of them do)they have a war waiting for them. The Army/Navy game is everything that is good in sports that gets lost in all of the talk about DJ vs. AJ and Mike Vick aka Ron Mexico, and steriods. The quality of play is not as high, but that is not what the poll was about.

First of all most Texas fans will tell you that OU is our biggest rival and I would assume vice versa. OU has beaten Texas the last 5 times. Prior to that Texas won 3 in a row including 8 out of 11 from 89-99. Very streaky series that Texas still holds the all-time edge in 55-39-5.
Most OU fans that I've talked to still say that Nebraska is the biggest rival, even though NU has been down as of late and they're in seperate divisions in the Big 12. It's about the length of their rivalry, always a joy for OU to beat NU no matter how good or abd each team is.

Well if it is about the length of the rivalry then the nebraska is not their biggest rival. OU and nebraska first played on 11/23/12 nebraska won.

Texas and OU met at least in 1908. I only remember this because it was a 50-0 win for the sooners and the largest margin of victory until recently. The rrs was moved to the cotton bowl in 1935, it has been a sellout since 1945. I cant remember how far back the game goes but it is longer than 1912 for sure.

I'm not saying that OU-Texas isn't a big rivalry, I'm just saying that OU recognizes Nebraska as their biggest rival.

Maybe you and I have dealt with some different Sooners. It all depends who you talk to I'm sure. My trips into that state and seeing all the upside down horn stickers and tshirts say otherwise. No school brings out the venom for Texas or OU more than the other one. OU/Nebraska have a mutual respect for eachother and have played some big time games against eachother. Both are big rivalries no doubt. The whole division thing, Nebraska falling off and not playing OU every year, and Mack vs. Stoops has definitely elevated the RRS again.

It seems to me Oklahoma, by having a bunch of rivals, ends up not having one huge rival that overshadows all the other teams.

I have in-laws that live in Oklahoma and they are huge Oklahoma State fans. I visited them when they played Oklahoma (the year before last) and you would think that Oklahoma State was Oklahoma's biggest rival from the commotion that weekend. It was funny seeing the neighbor wars, the houses with split designs on their curbs for the husband/wife from each school, etc. People were going crazy. . . Oklahoma might just have too many rivals. . .

I don't know if we have enough...

No in state rivalries (which is kind of nice, OSU is the surrogate football team of many ohio schools)

Penn State? Maybe...the game is crazy at State College, thats for sure.

I'd say Wisconsin comes at a far,far second to Michigan, as of recent times. Two dirty, bitter games in a row - Reynolds doing his thing the first time, and then Wisconsin stomping on our block "O" after they beat us for our first loss at home in a looong time. That was a split second away from being a riot.

Despite what Michigan or OSU fans might say of the other schools there is a mutual respect for their teams. In fact, I think I follow Michigan football almost as closely as OSU. I hate to say it but I was rooting for Michigan for about the first half of the rose bowl, then I realized that they STILL couldn't figure out how to contain a mobile QB, and thus started laughing at my friend, who goes to Michigan.

Back when the Big 10 got more respect in the media, it was much easier for me to root against Michigan in bowl games. But now, I find myself torn. I turn on the game thinking "come on Texas!" but soon find that I'm pulling for the Big 10. This may be sacrilege to say, but I usually find myself rooting for Michigan in bowl games - especially if the Bucks already won theirs (as was the case this year).

As far as the Army/Navy game, I love it. It's cold, it's crazy, it's two crappy teams beating the snot out of eachother. How can you not love that kind of football.

Biggest rivalry has to be The Game though. However, I may be a little biased......and drunk.

I usually root for Michigan in bowl games, too. I often root for Michigan in non-conference games. And usually, when conference play starts up, I root against Michigan only because a Michigan loss tends to help Ohio State move up in the standings.

But I think I agree with you. It's easy to root for Michigan after Ohio State won. The only reason I was rooting for Texas in the Rose Bowl was because I picked them to win in all my bowl pick 'em games.

i love the army navy game. it is college football in its greatest light. a bunch of guys who are playing 100% for the love of the game. as high lonesome very eloquently put it, that game is what college football is all about. <O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

tOSU scum... that is the definition of a rivalry. not just in college football. but in sports period. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />ohio is a MASSIVE sports state. not just college football, not just pro football, not just baseball, not just basketball. there are very few pro sports that you won't find in ohio. we are very passionate fans who love our teams and follow them religiously. we have "rivalries" all over the place. browns vrs. bengals, browns vrs ravens, browns vrs. broncos, bengals vrs. ravens, reds vrs indians, cavs vrs. bulls, and then you can toss in teams like UC xavier and kentucky for college basketball. and those are just the teams that people outside ohio would instantly recognize. if you asked the people in <ST1:pohio to pick just one rivalry in ohio you would get at least 95% of the populist pointing to 1 game. tOSU vrs scum. and that is counting those who don't follow college football. <O:p</O:p

i literally have people who call me on the day of "the game" to wish *me* luck in "the game". these are people who don't even follow college football. people who couldn't name a single guy on either team. ive dated women from kentucky who have never watched a football game let alone college. women who couldn't tell you what holding was. but knew who woody and bo were and knew what "the game" is. (save the kentucky jokes for a different thread :tongue2: ).

to me a rivalry isn't just a game with major implications or a game with a storied tradition. lets face it, most games in sports have storied traditions, just look at the big 10. how many games does the winner take home an "item" for bragging rights? a rivalry to me is a game that overshadows implications of a win/loss, overshadows records, overshadows the players, the coaches, the associated organizations, and the fans. a rivalry is a game that is so embedded in your culture that it is no longer a game. its a part of who and what you are. not just for the local fans of said sport. but for everyone even indirectly linked to that culture. <O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

nearly every team has a game every year that define both the team and its fans. however, very few games in any sport can claim the impact that tOSU scum has upon its surrounding populous culture. even if you do not follow college football and actually dislike football in general. if you grew up in <ST1:pohio or in michigan you are defined as a person by that game. it is apart of who you are.

that is why tOSU scum is the greatest rivalry in sports period. not because of the impact the game has on its players/fans/organizations. but because the impact of the game goes so far beyond the players/fans/organizations.
