New Professional Football League (UFL)

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Mavs' owner Cuban says pro football demand is greater than supply

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a group considering formation of a football league that would compete with the NFL for players drafted lower than the second round.

The league, still very much in the preliminary stage, would play its games on Friday nights. The NFL does not play then because of the potential conflict with high school football.
"It's a pretty simple concept," Cuban said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "We think there is more demand for pro football than supply."

And he'll let people put whatever they want on their jerseys, and they'll have cameras on the field during play, and the players will be paid based on the outcomes of games.....It's a new concept!!!

I've always felt the NFL might be able to create a viable "minor/development league", bringing NFL-style football to cities that otherwise would never have a team, and a system by which teams could develop and/or retain the rights to players they sign or draft, but don't make their primary roster. This wouldn't be something that competes with the NFL, just supplements it. Obviously contracts and salaries would be much smaller, but I think it could be pretty compelling regionally as you'd be still be seeing very talented players out there going all out trying to "make the show."

But a competing league, creating by someone outside of the NFL? Can't see it happening.

Well there's NFL Europe, or was have no idea if it's still around, that was a great "minor league" for NFL players, also, there's already Arena which is actually picking up popularity due to it's faster pace and the fact that the ticket prices are reasonable. We went to an Arena game a few years ago and it was actually pretty fun.

I read that Sacramento and Vegas are up for teams. I imagine they'll continue along those lines of large US cities with neither a major college team (forgetting UC-Davis recently beat Stanford and UNLV in the MWC) nor a nearby NFL one. San Antonio I would bet on getting a team should the league happen, perhaps even the likes of a Richmond or a Long Island team for the folks who don't want to drive through DC and NYC.

If that were to happen, my interest in the league would increase drastically.
