wasn't quite sure where to put this, but since its going to be used for alot of highschool sports in the midwest/ne ohio area I figured this would work.

The Geneva Area Recreational, Educational, Athletic Trust is a new state of the art Sports and Athletic complex being built in Geneva(of all places) right off Rt 90 here in Northeast Ohio.

This complex will feature two indoor facilities totaling 370,000 square feet, as well as outdoor facilities such as a football/track stadium.

The First building will be ready and open this coming February. The outdoor stadium will be ready for next football season(to be used by Geneva High School). The second indoor building will be operational shortly after in the fall.

I grew up in Geneva and still live close to the area as my family still lives there. In fact they live right around the corner from the new complex and construction is moving at a very rapid pace. It was initially started and funded by a guy in Geneva that owns/runs the air conditioning company Nordic Air(apparently he became a bigtime millionair through scoring a military contract and has expanded his business immensely in recent years). Since then others have jumped aboard but who, I do not know. The complex was initially estimated to cost 100-120 million dollars.

They plan on holding athletic tournaments year round for all sports, such as AAU basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, etc...and are hoping to hold college athletics as well. Geneva Area City Schools are in a complete rebuilding phase where they just built a new highschool a few years back and are currently doing so with all of the elementary schools. They were planning on building a new athletics complex at the site of the new school until this was brought up so its saving the school system alot of money(and will probably increase enrollment over the years and bring revenue in from outside the area).

The group behind this are not doing this just for the sports from what they have said. They are doing this to help the students and kids in the area better themselves through academics and keeping them out of trouble in an area that has been seeing hard times recently. According to interviews/articles that've been published in papers over the last yaer or so, every student to use the facility must keep a copy of their latest report card on file at the facility and must reach grade requirements to use the equipment/facilities and if they do not, classrooms with tutoring sessions and having resources provided to help them will also be available.

The area has alot of room for growth and has been steadily over the last 5-10 years. Geneva is a nice place, right in the middle of Wine Country, but it seems the more east you go, the worse it gets towards the PA state line. Alot of businesses are already putting out plans to build new restaraunts, hotels, etc right in the area. I know my parents are happy as their property value is going to skyrocket because of this.

Just a quick overview of the indoor facilities, which are to be open to the public.

Building 1 - 170,000 square feet, to be complete February 2009
Football Stadium - to be complete August 2009
Building 2 - 200,000 square feet, to be complete Fall 2009

The indoor facilities (of building 1 & 2 combined) will feature the following:
  •
  • 40-60 volleyball courts
    [*]12 basketballcourts
    [*]18 tennis courts
    [*]50 wrestling areas
    [*]7 artificial turf soccer fields
[*]8 artificial turf baseball infields, with portable pitchers mounds
[*]8 batting cages and pitching cages
[*]300 meter, 8 lane track (the only one in the country) with electronic timing
    [*]Nautilus training equipment
    [*]Free weights
[*]80 yard indoor football field with end zones, artificial turf
    [*]Classrooms
    [*]Locker rooms
    [*]Food Courts
    [*]Indoor seating capacity of 8000

The stadium features:
  • Artificial turf for football and soccer
  • 8 Lane all-weather track with electronic timing
  • Seating capacity of 4000
The area blueprint shows they've left themselves alot of room for expansion, especially around the stadium so I can easily see them adding more seating to the stadium in the near future if necessary, as 4,000 seems to be a little low for seating if they actually go through with some of the events they want to schedule.
