i trust you...i havent examined the new scheme at all yet....but...when has anything ever been slanted the big ten's way?? a team from the big ten has to be undefeated to play for the title....while a florida school can lose once...its the same as always...

i just think its more of the same.....

Di, I'm not even arguing that the system is screwing anyone ... yet. I agree that for the most part wins and losses will force the system to be fairly accurate. I don't have a problem with the polls yet, it's just way too early. But I believe this system is by far the easiest BCS formula (to date) to be manipulated. It's almost right back to 2 polls deciding everything. I've never really liked the BCS, and I really don't like this formula.

FWIW, the media got it's way. They've been touting a split championship for several years because of the prestige they lost with the BCS. Last season they got what they wanted ... a chance to split the championship and thumb their noses at the BCS. What's really aggrivating is that last years system should have worked just fine. What was the problem? The polls (both) didn't drop Oklahoma far enough after their loss to K State. Any loss that late in the season is almost a guaranteed 3-5 spot fall ... Oklahoma dropped 2. Juuuuuust enough to keep them in the title game. What's worse? Oklahoma didn't just lose in a good game ... they got it handed to em. A loss like that is generally 5-8 spot loss in the polls. Worse yet? Oklahoma was basically told they could lose that game and still play for the BCS title. That's how arrogant the media was. Now the media was backed into a corner from claiming OU might have been the best team ever. They never anticipated an OU butt kickin from K State.

What should have happened? OU drops to 4-6 and LSU matches up with USC in the title game. This would have happened in almost every other season of college football. The media and coaches "screwed the pooch" by not believing what they saw ... in fact K State WAS better that OU ... in fact OU was NOT as good as their hype.

Now we get a season, and BCS formula, where the media and coaches will have an even greater impact if there are 3-4 tightly grouped teams at the end of the season. I just have an uneasy feeling about a system that is eliminating the checks and balances from the equation. It requires faith that the media and coaches will do their homework and make their selections without any bias.

Bias in the polls is nothing new, especially when it comes to the Big Ten. Saw the same thing back in the 70's. Oklahoma could do no wrong then - at least in the eyes of the pollsters. A mediocre win against a middle tier wouldn't hurt them a bit, but let a Big Ten team grind out a tough one against a formidable opponent and they could drop in the polls even with a win. I do hope it all works out in the end - after all it's only week 2. The season hasn't started yet.

I recall reading an article last year by Ivan "I really don't know squat about football" Maisel claiming that the AP was the "gold standard" among college polls. I havent read his crap since..

They might as well get it over with switch to this format :

<TABLE width=399 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=shortheadlines>BCS Bowl Game Invitations To Be Awarded To Highest Bidder</TD></TR><TR><TD class=shortarticles> </TD><TD class=shortarticles>NEW YORK--Miles Brand, head of the NCAA bowl committee, announced a new, foolproof system to determine bowl-eligibility. Starting in 2005, all bowl games will be awarded to the highest bidder.
“Our long quest for a perfect system has come to an end,” Brand said at a press conference Monday. “It is my pleasure to announce that there will be no more disputes about bowl invitations, and no more national controversy over who is more deserving. From now, whoever comes up with the most cash gets in.”
When questioned about the fairness of the new system, Brand pointed out that it’s really not that different than the current system.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I wish I agreed with you DiHard, but this year more than ever there will be partisan voting. With the change in the BCS, Coaches and Media can affect the outcome more than ever ... and they probably will. The frickin morons who run the BCS didn't see this crap coming? Unbelievable.
I think that they indeed saw it coming. Another split title is unavoidable and they know this. I think the BCS people just wanted someone else to share the blame with. "Its not OUR fault blame the coaches and the media."

any system, (other than a playoff ) will allways be viewed as being bias to someone or another. as long as the allmighty dollar rules the bowl system we will never have a playoff!!!!, but that controversy is what makes college football fans so passionate (i hope i spelled that right) about their teams.
