First of all Ray Allen is about to turn 30 so hes not even that old... all we need him to do is shoot the three and Reggie Miller has quite a few years on him and he looks fine shootin the 3.

Second of all, the worst thing gilbert could do this offseason is go and get guys who are bargains... this guy is a new, rich owner who should have plenty of money to spend which means he should get a high quality guy like michael redd... someone mentioned something earlier about redd wanting to stay in milwaukee... hmmm, do i want to play with desmond mason or lebron james? Desond, Lebron... real hard choice to make for pretty mcuh the same amount of money

And by the way someone else mentioned something about a pg that can run the fast break... dan dickau anyone? hes a FA this year and hes got 12.5 ppg and about 5 apg this year + he's young... he didn't start his career well but he should be fairly cheap this offseason and could if a quality young player to put on the roster.

LBJ is under contract thru 2007.. then one year as a restricted... thereafter an unrestricted if no contract in place...
When another team wants to sign a restricted free agent, it signs the player to an offer sheet, the principal terms of which the original team is given 15 days to match. The offer sheet must be for at least three seasons. The principal terms of the offer sheet cannot include non-cash forms of compensation. For example, it doesn't work to offer Denver's free agent a house on the beach within 15 minutes of the arena, knowing that it's impossible for Denver to match those terms. If the player's original team exercises its right of first refusal by matching the principal terms of the offer sheet, the player is then under contract to his original team and is no longer a free agent. If the player's original team does not exercise its right of first refusal within 15 days, the offer sheet becomes an official contract with the new team, and the player is no longer a free agent.
If I'm reading the rules correctly it sounds like the Cavs will keep Lebron for at least 3 more years after he is a restricted free agent since any contract offers that they can match have to be at least 3 years. I'm sure they will structure any FA contracts they sign so that they will be able to offer the max when Lebron is a FA.
It actually looks like they could sturcture contracts to pay out more this year and next and less the year Lebron is a FA. They only have to be under the cap the year the contract is signed. They just need to be sure that they can resign their younger players. Money doesn't seem to be an issue for Gilbert so he needs to work around the cap the best he can to build a good team.

This site seems to have all of the salary cap and contract info.
