New CAVS owner

More importantly the new owner has to hire the right people this offseason.

With everything I have read and heard that has happened this year Paul Silas forced Gilbert to fire him when he did. Silas quit coaching when in his mind figured he wouldn't be back next season. So think of it this way, if Silas was still here we might be out of the playoffs already.

The only reason for the huge media backlash is that Silas was a national media favorite.

This year he is the biggest problem, but he know's that his investment rests on Lebron's shoulders. I believe that Gilbert is smart enough to know that he has to do what Lebron needs to keep him happy and put the players around him to win. I don't know how the NBA salary cap works, but it doesn't sound hard like the NFL since a team like the Knicks is nearly double what it is supposed to be. Gilbert needs 2 new guards for next season and he needs to bring back Z for the right price. I would like to see them bring back Traylor too, but they would be fine with Z, Gooden, and Wild Thing. Jackson and Pavlovic should be good coming off the bench next year and Snow is under contract so he will be the backup PG. I would love to see the Cavs sign Redd or Allen, but I don't know what the chances are of that. If they can get a superstar like one of those guys they only need a PG who can run the break and play D.

I think what Hawg is trying to say is... let's give the guy an offseason to work and see what happens... but no matter where... because I think they could upgrade pretty easily anywhere, except maybe Z (Who is not the long term solution at C anyway)... is to get another consistent scoring threat....

Paxon was the biggest problem for this team, and he will continue to be long after this year as he has squandered cleveland's 1st round picks for the next 2 years.

A 1st rounder for Jiri Welsh? That alone is worthy of his firing.

he opted to bring in eric snow instead of drafting jameer nelson, which turned out poorly as well. The only draft choice that actually worked out is lebron, which was a gimmie.

Jackson might turn out better than Jameer Nelson. I'm willing to give him another year or 2. This year Nelson would have probably put the Cavs in the playoffs.

Trading a future 1st rounder for Welsh I had no problem. The problem was it forced us to drop the lottery protection for this years draft. Imagine us having a 1st rounder this year when we don't make the playoffs. We can pick the best young PG and then use our money to sign Z and a guy that can hit outside shots.

But we do have a draft pick for 2006. Thanks to past Cavalier owner of the past Ted Stepian.

After watching the game tonight I think the Cavs need to pick up the option on Traylor as well as resign Z. Between Z, Gooden, Wild Thing, and Traylor they have a lot of depth at the 4 and 5. 2 good guards is all that stand in between the Cavs and a good run in the playoffs.

But you can read the post-game comments by LeBron and wonder whether Z wants to stay in Cleveland. LeBron says he wants him around, but Z might be giving off vibes that he doesn't want to hang around. If he jets, that opens up cap room to sign an outside threat. If they overbid for Redd, that might not be a terrible thing. LeBron, Redd, Verajao, Gooden, Traylor, Luke Jackson....throw in a dependable point (have no idea where to find one) and you could have a 50-win team next year.

It looks to me like Verajao is ready to step up to 30+ minutes a game next year. I agree with exhawg about the 1 and 2 position. Even if Z is gone, those are the most important.

Does anyone know how much money they have free for next year??? I think its like 20 million.. im worried because everyone even mel kyper on espn radio was saying no way Lebron stays around and after this Silas move I am thinking the worst.. someone make me feel better.. I can just see this thing going down in typical Cleveland fashon

Lebron is under contract through 2007 and I think he is a restricted free agent after that. He won't be going anywhere for a while. I would hope that no matter how much Gilbert wanted to fire Silas that he would have talked to Lebron about it first to make sure it was ok.

If you get rid of Z and Traylor you will only have 2 big guys. They would have to find 2 more C/PF type players.

LBJ is under contract thru 2007.. then one year as a restricted... thereafter an unrestricted if no contract in place...

without Z and Tractor, you have 0 big men... one cannot consider what else is on the bench as legitimate NBA big men...

The problem I have with Gilbert/Silas issue is... what was the plan? not what was the knee jerk reaction... just what did Gilbert have in place next? nothing.. two major things an executive better know... 1) you enter into a whole new arena, and you better get the lay of the land before making changes else you'll start an earthquake and you don't know what will get broken nor how bad it will be untill it's too late... 2) don't make a decision until you have a plan to resolve the situation

Gilbert broke both cardinal rules... and is acting like a guy who started a $5K business and luck brought the rest... scary... If his actions cause other potential coaching candidates to assume he's a meddler, the list of candidates willing to accept that dwindle... and especially the creme-de-creme...
