Negative Recruiting Tactics and Silent Verbals (split then merged)

Here is the thing that most people let slide right past them...recruiting is all about hype. When tOSU was in the headlines every day during the season, the kids were eating it all up and proclaiming as much. However, now that its been a few weeks and the kids have come off of that high from The Game, things are starting to slow down in the tOSU promotions. Coaches are visiting and showing love and kids are not as open in their glowing remarks.

This is not a bad thing, but it certainly is not as cozy as when kids are saying tOSU is their definite leader. Coaches are on short time now as NLOID is only two months away...that means more attention, more pressure, more desperation, and more kids doing more thinking.

Expect a few slow weeks during December...maybe even a few casualties. However, January recruiting is like November football...that is where the pretenders are separated from the contenders.

I expect January to be just like the November we already experienced.

And guys like Zook don't have a bowl game to prepare for....

Right now, the Ohio State staff has to remain focused on goal number one - winning the NC game on January 8th. If lack of attention to recruiting costs them a prospect or two, then so be it.

I am not one of those read between the lines, what are you really trying to say guys and I hate to make assumptions without facts. So help me out here.

Are you saying we should trust the coaches and lets just see how it plays out on this one?

Thanks

Not sure where to put this but this thread seems close enough. How come certain schools like Texas seem to have most of their commits and recruiting wrapped up at this point?

90% of Texas's classes are usually Texas kids. In-state kids tend to commit earlier, especially to the home team. Also with Texas it is a philosophy thing. They try to get the kids to commit early and will pressure them to do so lots of times...

Why doesn't everyone pressure kids to commit early? Wouldn't that make everything much easier?

It's a slippery slope... It will work a lot of times with in-state kids that have dreamed of playing at the home school, but it will likely cost you top notch OOS kids that have plenty of options to go elsewhere... It likely cost Texas Barksdale this year...

From the perspective of the school and its fans pressure to make an early (read potentially premature decision) is great.

From the perspective of the kids and their families it sucks.

Same rules that apply to any type of sales - high pressure is good for the salesman.

Marketing guy here. Get kids to make a decision they regret and you'll have all kinds of problems in the future. Some pressure is needed for some kids that just aren't going to make up their minds anyway but high Oh8ch is right, it might make the recruiter look good but in the long run the kid, the family, and the team pay a price.

I say let's go with the coaches on this one:biggrin:

All schools at one point or another get bit by offering and accepting too early. I recall this being a huge issue with PSU in the past. They would get as many verbals as possible before kids played their Sr. season and ended up with a lot of kids who not as high qulaity as they thought.
