Need Help with Buckeye Basement. Post pics of yours or make suggestions.

Last year we bought the house we had been renting for 5 years. Wouldn't you know that the very same year we buy the house the sump pump fails and we end up with water int he basement. The Sump pump has been replaced and the entire basement has been torn out (carpet and wall paneling). We are in the processs of putting up drywall and will be painting next week and the carpet people are coming today or tomorrow to get a mesurement for new carpeting. I want to do a Buckeye theme but really have no skills in the interior decoration field. I'm curious what carpet some of you may have used and what boarders and paint schemes you have used. I know some of these things seem obvious but until you have actually put it together you have no idea how difficult it can be.

If you have suggestions on decoration ideas thats great. If you just want to post a pic of what you have done thats great too. Anything is going to help at this point. I would love to see as many pics as possible.

Seriously, though - I'd make sure you've got a back-up sump pump (not to mention a contingency plan if the power fails) before I put too much $$ into a basement remodel.

First and foremost, Id put an alarm on your sump pump... then, id do something along the lines of a gray berber carpet.. great sturdy carpet that cleans up nicely and hides dirt... I would also do the walls a similar gray.. then accesorize the crap with buckeye stuff... this way when/if the time comes to sell your house the walls and carpet are pretty neutral...

I do have a second sump pump. Funny thing is that they both failed (for different reasons) and thats why we ended up with a wet basement.

I had not heard about a "sump pump alarm". I will look into that.

Its funny you bring that up. My wife is thinking the same thing. We own 3 acres of land in the country. The problem is that we have young children and will have a lot of running to do in the near future. I would rather stay at the house we are in (and therefore put more into the basement)but the wife keeps saying she wants to move. Even if we do move it will be at least 5 years before we will have the money to build. Also, if we get a Buckey fan that wants to buy isn't it possible that he may be willing to spend a little more if he gets a Buckeye basement?

Before finishing my basement, I installed a backup sump pump. It basically runs off a car battery. The cost with the battery was around $220. If the power goes out and the backup has to kick on, an alarm will sound until you turn it off. It's supposed to run around 8 hours. Hopefully, it never gets used.

Oh, BTW my plan of hooking up a computer UPS to the sump pump didn't work. Even the pretty good one that I got only powered the sump pump for 2 seconds before it got overloaded. I hooked it up to the TV, Tivo, surround sound system instead. That should let me watch tv for 30 minutes to an hour if the power goes out. :p There's nothing in the basement to save right now anyway. I probably just need to hook up the alarm on my other UPS so that it will wake me up if the power goes out. That will warn me to get a generator and turn it on. :p When it's rainy our sump pump runs every 10 minutes or so, but I think the sump pump hole is maybe 1/4 full when it runs. I don't see any signs of the basement ever flooding so hopefully the power in our neighborhood is pretty reliable.

That's the problem. If the electric goes out for an extended period of time during a storm, the water only has one place to go. My in-laws had this happen a couple years ago and had two inches of water in the basement.
