First of all, I'd like to state that I was in marching band in high school. I went to Lakota East High School. We won every competition that we attended during my Sophomore year. My dream when I was a kid was to perform during the Rose Bowl Parade. Well, I went to California, and I performed during the Holiday Bowl halftime show. My band received second place at the Holiday Bowl competition. We lost to a flashy all-girl Japanese band that performed orchestrated music. Their drills weren't even that impressive. We were the best American band at the competition. Two years later, Lakota West (Our sister school) went to the Rose Bowl Parade.
Speaking of which, in my well-educated opinion, you are out of your mind NDChief. I can safely say that my old high school band could outmarch 90% of the bands in Division 1. Ohio State's band is one of the exceptions (As is the band from the University of Tennessee. Great drills. Really impressive). Why? Because it matters in Ohio. The best damn marching band talent in the land comes from Ohio. If you disagree, you can kiss my fat British ass. Beaver Creek, Grove City, Lakota East (My alma mater) and West, etc. are all top notch. The list goes on and on and on. Kids from these schools go to drum corps all the time. It matters.
Texas rarely marches. When Texas does march, they have individuals who are out of step. They are a showband. They are not a marching band. When they are stationary, their forms are not perfect. That is unacceptable in my book. USC's band is also rather overrated. Their trumpets do not have good marching form. Their elbows are never in the right posture, and that just ticks me off. The Rose Bowl halftime show wasn't enjoyable in the slightest.
Notre Dame's band, as stated earlier, doesn't really keep the interest of the fans. I saw them perform at the Notre Dame - Tennessee game in 2005. Whilst they had solid music, they weren't top notch marchers. Why? Catholic high schools don't compete at the same kind of marching band competitions.
By the way, Austen Rau, the man who "dotted the i" at the home game against Indiana in 2006 and at the 2007 BCS National Championship game, went to my high school. This one time, at band camp, I met the guy. He was awesome.
Sorry for the language. I have a lot of pride when it comes to Ohio marching bands. Uneducated opinions that do not have facts to back them up are not welcome in my book.

The halftime show for The Game in 2006 put on by TBDBITL was the best halftime show I have ever seen in my life. The theme was movies (or something, it probably had a more creative name) and they had a Titanic formation that sunk into a sea of blue tarps, with the splitting in half and everything. Also they had an ET bicycle formation with rotating wheels. They probably had some other cool stuff too that I don't remember. Like I said, best halftime show I've ever seen.

My only live viewing of TBDBITL was the unfortunate "Titanic" episode, so...... :p

I agree that most football fans don't care about halftime shows or the bands. Anyone who says "I like Team A better than Team B because their band is just better" shouldn't be watching football. It's fine to be proud of your team's band. Great, even. But no one gives championships to the football team with the best band. But to say "I don't know anything, but here's my opinions anyway" means you're purposely being stupid.

To be honest, you don't need to go any further than the Big Ten for quality bands. There isn't a bad one in the conference, even the smaller ones. But unfortunately that's about all the good bands I've seen. As far as USC goes, they are absolutely horrible. Out of every D-1 school's band, I would pick USC over only Stanford, at least they try to march, it's shitty but they try. And when did you see Tennessee? Much of their drill may been influenced from a former OSUMB member and grad assistant who is an assistant director there.

I love our band, but it's not worth arguing about it to me. I don't know much about music or bands though. I just love our band because of it's tradition and that it's Ohio State's band. But more so the tradition. I love the tradition. But if i weren't an Ohio State fan, I probably wouldn't get why OSU fans love their band so much.
