Our defense: 9 new starters.
First 2 opp: Among the best rushing offenses in the nation.

Our defense will improve immensely, and we won't face another 2 week 1-2 punch of rushing offense like the last 2 weeks.

I guaran-damn-tee you that the 84 teams ranked above us did not play rushing offenses as good as the ones we played. I'll go further and bet you dollars to doughnuts that we improve 60+ spots by the time we play Michigan.

Stats at this point in the season are of limited utility. Stat rankings at this point in the season are worse than worthless.

Who cares about where you are ranked right now especially since some schools have been playing sister of the poor and we have played two of the better running teams in the country and sat in Nickel for a lot of the second game and cover 3 for a lot of the first game.

NO reason to worry.

An Interesting Statistical Anomaly

Maybe this is actually telling us something, maybe it is simply an anomaly - it being so early in the season.

But, the NCAA "Toughest Schedule" rankings, for 9+ Inter-Div games sorted on Cumulative Opposition have an astounding confluence.

ALL, yes, that's right every single one of the Big 10 teams is ranked as having a 20th toughest or higher schedule by the NCAA at present. They are the only conference that has each team ranked in such a high manner.

The specific rankings - which let's face it are a snapshot, can change like quicksand and are merely intended for fun and short-term bragging rights, are as follows:
Rank -- Team
1 -- Illinois
2 -- Indiana
3 -- Minnesota
4 -- Iowa
5 -- Michigan
6 (T) - Ohio State
8 -- Wisconsin
10(T) - Penn St.
10 (T) - Mich St.
14 -- Purdue
20 -- Northwestern

I wonder if that has ever happened before? (And by that I mean to any conference).

Even more interesting as the Big Ten has the best non-conf winning percentage of any of the major conferences right now.
