NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

I can think of one program that falls into that latter category
I can think of a shitload of programs in that latter category.
I'm sure we're both thinking of the cheaters up north.

First category: Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, probably LSU. Maybe USC - there's no reason that they shouldn't be able to make the playoffs every year. Same with Florida. Probably Oregon.
Second category: Cheaters, Notre Dame, Texas, Penn State, Nebraska. Probably most SEC teams. Maybe Iowa, Sparty, Wisconsin. Indiana maybe already belongs in this category. Miami, Clemson.

This sport is cooked. Nobody is going to watch 8-3 WVU vs 8-3 Pitt competing for a CFP Participation Trophy.

And now nobody is going to watch the blue bloods other than their own fans, because they're guaranteed to get into the CFP no matter what.

Like UGA/Bama last week for example. Completely and utterly worthless game now. I watch games like those every Saturday and have my entire life, that's done now. Over.

The TV execs played themselves. They just fucked the sport.

I’m picturing a future 24-team playoff.

One team from the non Power-4.
Notre Dame, probably as long as they’re 8-4.
Three ACC teams.
Three Big-12 teams.

That leaves 8 spots each for the B1G and the SEC. So basically all teams that went at least 5-4 in conference play.

It’s NFL Lite.

And before anyone argues about the fcs,

I was at the week 0 game at NDSU and sat next to a guys who has been a die hard Bisons fan for decades. He told me that about half the stadium was full during early round playoff games because the fans were getting bored with those games since they made the playoffs every year and won during most of them.

An extreme example since they were a fcs dynasty for a while, but I think it will hold as if LSU went to the playoffs at 8-4 to play a 10-2 liberty, I would not care to go to that game.

I am absolutely certain this is not only going to hurt regular season viewership, but it is also going to drive down ticket prices for regular season games.

Nobody is paying hundreds of dollars to watch a regular season game anymore. Those days are done.

Hopefully the schools are getting a huge slice of the CFP pie, otherwise they are going to be in pain from lack of ticket revenue.

It can still work if the P4 teams don't play non P4 teams

Play 9 in your conference and 3 say 1 of each from the other P4.

If you can't finish top half of the B1G or SEC without the lower level cupcakes then fuck off.

Won't happen overnight but the "super conference" type scheduling is my guess for step 2 after the 24 team playoff is officially a done deal.

If they don't change the way the P4 do regular season then, yeah. Its fucked.

It will have to be mandated. If it is up to the schools, it will be cupcake city.

Even just saying P4 isn't enough. The blue bloods will just cut $1 million dollar checks to the bottom tier P4 schools instead of MAC schools.

It needs to be mandated, with pre-determined matchups based on prior year's standings.

And even with all of that? You're just NFL lite now. It still doesn't matter if you lose a few games.

I've been saying that since they started talking about a 4 game playoff.

It was the greatest regular season sport in the world. Once you put a playoff on it, to some degree or another, you water down that thing that made it unique.

Now it's clearly too many but I still believe they are doing it with other steps in mind. This alone doesn't make any sense.

You're doing it wrong.
Minimum of 16 SEC teams will get in.
- Some ESPN nerd, probably.

If they expand, they absolutely better let the G6 champs in... all of them, no matter what. 10 auto bids for EVERY conference champion. That leaves 14 at large, and I say no more than 3 at-large bids from any single conference, so even if they take the next best 3 from the P4 conferences, that's still only 12 other teams. ND would make 13, so we'd be looking at another G6 team.... and already I hate this, and it's still my *best* take at 24 teams without having 7th place SEC teams invited..... Fuck this fucking idea. The playoffs are already too big.

I don’t think this was done with the idea that it would benefit the G6 schools.
