NCAA puts ban on Indian mascots in postseason events

Are they going to make cities change their names away from Indian names before these postseason events can take place there? I'd hate to think that Indianapolis could still hold NCAA tournament games. "City of Indians" sounds so insulting!

thats an excellent point zurp. and what about cities named for people whose actions were harmful to indians? such as columbus? you'd think honoring someone whose actions lead to the death of a significant number of indians would be far more offensive than using their names...

Just think how hypocritical that would be if the NCAA headquarters were located there. :wink2:

I'm usually on the NCAA's side when they do things that seem, at first glance, to be heartless or cruel or stupid. Stuff like not letting a player raise money so his parents can go see him play a football game. But that's not relevant here, anyway. I just don't understand the NCAA. If they're going to begin the ball rolling on this issue, they should let it roll all the way to its disastrous end. Otherwise, keep it where it was.

You're damn straight.

I find it offensive that Notre Dame calls itself the fighting Irish. I don't care if it's true OR a tribute (like virtually all of the Indian names were), I want it off.

What's fair for the goose is fair for the gander, even if it's typical hypersensitive PC bullshit.

That's actually a pretty good point. If they are going to start to crack down on the use of nationalities as mascots, why would one group be more sensitive than the next?

It's all complete bullshit. I want to know if there is actually a group of native americans out there protesting the mascots, because in my mind the mascots are actually honoring them, putting them up on a pedestal as warriors and their symbol.

But I guess after centuries of abuse, murder, and taking away homes and tribal lands, making schools stop using their image as a mascot would be a nice reparation :roll1: .

University of Illinois Seeks New Mascot; Students Attempt to Provide

Since the forced departure of Chief Illiniwek in February 2007, the University of Illinois has been mascot-less. While their Big Ten rivals have fielded ancient Greek warriors, oversized and suspiciously cuddly hawks, badgers and wildcats, not to mention whatever the hell Ohio State's Brutus Buckeye is supposed to be, the Fighting Illini have had no symbol to represent them, no one to come out onto the field at halftime and do a little dance to stir up the crowd.
It makes you feel kind of sorry for them, doesn't it? However offensive the Chief may have been (and however little he had to do with the actual Illiniwek people), he was a school tradition for 81 years.

And so a confederation of Illinois students calling themselves Campus Spirit Revival has established a contest to find a worthy replacement. This week Illinois students (and Illinois students only; sorry alumni) will vote on the new mascot and logo. The winning designer will receive $200 and a chance to present the design to the university administration.

Submissions have been posted on Campus Spirit Revival's Facebook page, and they appear to have a wide range of inspiration, from Honest Abe to World War I doughboys to the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans. And also what appears to be a blatant ripoff of the Chicago Bears logo. (Well, they do have the same colors. It's easy to get confused.)

.../cont/...

LINK to the entries.
