NCAA accuses Alabama State of 668 rules violations

I really hate it when stuff like this happens.

So let me get this straight - it's ALABAMA STATE that is the worst offender? And of course it's the one that the NCAA is going to crack down on.

I think it's pretty easy to see that larger more prominent sports universities (USC, Ohio State, Texas, etc.) are breaking the exact same, if not more, number of rules.

I'm sorry, bro, but a comment like that on a Buckeye board just can't be allowed to slide.

I taught at Ohio State. In my experience, the sports administration people closely monitored the athletes (in all sports) in your course. You received detailed forms regularly during the quarter asking if the student was attending class, about their test scores. Faculty were constantly reminded about the obligations of faculty and boosters in relation to NCAA rules, including fair and transparent grading and course administration and no extra tuition not offered to all students. There were many steps taken to ensure that NCAA rules were complied with, in the letter and spirit of those regulations.

There is no evidence to suggest that Ohio State is guilty of any violations and the entire program has been under close scrutiny of two NCAA investigations during the Clarett affair. I can't speak for the other programs you mention, but that is what I experienced as well. I think your post does a great disservice to the faculty and sports administration at Ohio State who work so hard to ensure that we don't have those problems.

Sorry about the rubies, but that comment is way out of line.

Among the penalties the NCAA can levy, it can require an institution to show cause why it should not be subject to further penalties if it fails to take appropriate disciplinary action against athletics personnel. It can also attach a show cause order to personnel themselves so that any school that hires them will be required to show cause why they should not be penalized.

In other words, the NCAA can't force institutions to fire people...

That's a ton of violations!

They monitor you closely at OSU. If there is an unaccounted for McDonalds receipt the administration will know it (if it has to do with drugs or grades or free meals).

My guess is that most of the violations against AlSU were mild, but easily documented. Death Penalty sounds a little harsh. Don't throw away the baby with the bathwater.

Only if you consider the ability to say "fire this person or we'll fuck up your program" to not qualify as the ability to force an institution to fire someone.

I don't imagine Alabama St. has an athletics employee who is worth taking on major penalties. They'd fire them without a second thought.
