Texas vs. Ohio State
Sept. 10th, 2005

Welcome to the second (first) game of Ohio State's EA Sports: NCAA 2006 digital season. Last week Ohio State beat Miami(Oh) 73-3...a game which I thought was so unrealistic it didn't deserve a writeup. But the BuckeyePlanet digital news team was at this epic match up between Texas and Ohio State in Columbus for the first meeting of these two football giants.
The game started out with the pregame picks. Herbie liked Vince Young and his game changing abilities. Corso then reached under the desk and pulled out a Bevo head. Corso picks Texas.
The Longhorns won the coin toss and chose to kick off. Santonio took the kick inside the endzone and brought it out to the 19 to start the battle. Troy Smith earned the starting job for the evening, and got things started off on the right foot with a 20 yard option keeper, followed by another option keeper for 17 yards. The offense looked balanced as they marched down to the 2, where Ryan Hamby caught a beautiful play action pass in the end zone for the score. Ohio State up 7-0.
Josh Huston's kick went deep into the end zone, so Texas starts offensively from their own 20. Vince Young looked to quiet the critics, completing every pass in the drive. Ohio State's defense stopped the run game cold, but Young's arm couldn't be contained. Minutes after OSU took a 7-0 lead, Young hooked up with Jordan Shipley on a 35 yard score. Tied 7-7.
The Buckeyes took the kickoff back to the 21, where the offense sputtered and stalled. Three plays later and AJ Trapasso came out for the punt. Unfortunately for the Bucks, the rest of the punt unit didn't come out with him. Texas' Selvin Young returned the punt 70 yards to the house, without much effort at all. Texas up 14-7.
The first quarter comes to an end, and so does the playing time of Troy Smith....for now. Smith had his second 3 and out to end the quarter, and the 2nd quarter started with another Trapasso punt. The Longhorns took the ball to their own 43 yard line, but on the first play Young showed why the aTm fans call him Uncle Rico. Brandon Mitchell picked him off at OSU's 3 yard line.
Justin Zwick took over on offense, but nobody could tell. The offense stalled again and the Buckeyes were forced to punt after 3 plays. Texas returned the punt with Selvin Young to the OSU 25 yard line. Things looked bad for the Bucks as the Horns moved the ball inside the 5. That is, until Ashton Youboty stepped up and stole one from Vince and took it 100 yards in the other direction for a defensive touchdown! Tied 14-14.
Texas started the drive after the touchback, and promptly worked the ball down field on the legs and arm of Vince. Young completed a pass to Limas Sweed, who had a nice run down to the 15. One problem, he dropped the ball at the end of it, and Anthony Schlegel scooped it up.
Ohio State took over on their own 20, and proceeded to go 3 and out once again. Trapasso becoming the only constant on the offensive side of the ball for the Buckeyes came out for another punt to Selvin Young. A bad punt from Trapasso combined with terrible kick coverage from the Bucks created another punt return touchdown. Selvin has 134 PR yards and 2 TDs without even breaking a sweat. Texas up 21-14.
With 48 seconds left, Ohio State decided to run the ball into the line three times and punt. The clock winds out on the punt and the Bucks head to the locker room down by 7.
Texas starts out the second half with some trickeration...a half back pass from Selvin to Shipley for 40 yards. 3 plays later and the Longhorns are in the end zone through the air to Limas Sweed. Texas up 28-14.
Ted Ginn returned the kick off from deep in the end zone to the 17, where Zwick was quickly sacked twice. On 3rd and 15 Troy Smith made his way back on to the field, and completed a 40 yard bomb to Ginn. A 20 yard option keeper and 27 yard pass to Santonio Holmes later and the Bucks pull within a touchdown. Texas up 28-21.
The two teams stepped up the defenses and traded punts. The fourth quarter started with the Longhorns going for it on 4th down, but the boar hunter was waiting. Schlegel picked Young off on a short pass intended for Selvin Young and returned the ball to the Texas 19.
The Texas D was too much, but the Bucks decided to go for it on 4th and a long 1. The play call was suspect...a play action turned into a QB scramble...and Troy Smith fumbled the oportunity to tie the game away.
Bobby Carpenter stepped up the defense forcing a fumble in the next UT drive, but Texas was able to recover. This was good for Anthony Schlegel, who picked off a tipped Vince Young pass on the next play. Ohio State ball at the UT 33.
Troy apparently felt bad for Vince, so he threw a nice pass to UT linebacker Robert Killebrew for the INT at the 5. Texas went 3 and out, and Ted Ginn called a fair catch at the 49.
Smith wasn't done pissing away opportunities, as he threw another pick to UT conerback Aaron Ross. Texas punted the ball back to OSU with 29 seconds left on their own 20, but 1 sack and 2 no-huddle double reverse to Ginn plays later, and UT had escaped the Shoe with a victory.
