Notre Dame remains nation's favorite college football team

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame may not be the country's best performing college football team, but they are No. 1 in the hearts of U.S. adults. They have been America's favorite college football team every year since The Harris Poll(R) first started asking this question in 1997 (with the exception of 2000 and 2001 as Harris Interactive(R) did not poll on this topic during these years).

Notre Dame is followed by Ohio State, which for the first time unseats Florida State for the No. 2 spot, while Florida State (which has been No. 2 for the past seven years) drops precipitously out of the top 10.

On-field performance typically plays a role in a team's showing in the "favorites" rankings, but this year the two are only loosely correlated. Only a handful of teams in the top 10 are currently ranked in the top 25 in the AP Poll, the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll or the BCS standings.

Perhaps due to allegiance to alumni or a given state, college football appears to have a more stable fan base than professional football, despite the changing fortunes of a given team. While Notre Dame and Penn State continue to struggle to regain national prominence on the field, their fan support remains firm.

Oklahoma, which has performed as well as any other top college football program over the past few years, actually falls out of the top 10 this year, lending credence to the gap between popularity and performance.

Also of note, while the Big 10 always boasts a few fan favorites, this year its popularity has surged with three teams out of the top five — Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State — and four out of the top 10 when including Wisconsin.

By contrast, this year, the state of Florida has its worst showing ever. For the first time, no Floridian college football team (University of Florida, Florida State or Miami) holds even one spot in the top 10.

These are some of the results of an online survey conducted by Harris Interactive between Oct. 20 and 25, 2004, among a nationwide cross section of 2,114 U.S. adults of whom 789 say they follow college football.

While interest in college football was on the rise in the late 1990s, this year it holds steady as 35 percent of U.S. adults report following college football, virtually the same as the last two years. Its popularity is highest among men and southerners.

Kinda suprised that F$U was number two for so long. The most popular team in country? They couldn't sell out their part of the Sugar Bowl a while back when we played 'em. We had more fans there, while having to travel four times as far to get to the stadium.

Methumps, you say Petey won't like it, but he, and you, know that So. Cal. just isn't a football kind of neighborhood. I've seen many times in the 70's and 80's when USC had a good team, but couldn't sell out their own stadium. Hell it's may still be happening as far as I know.

A point of confusion methomps. You say Petey won't like it, but you are Petie's #2 guy. Two different spellings, same person? or diffenent people?

Just because they are good doesn't mean people like them. Sure they have some band wagon fans, but they dont last very long. Oklahoma is a media darling. Bob Stoops has his dick so far up ESPNs ass that when he busts a load it comes out of their mouth. Fans of other schools don't like this. You may not mind that another school is better than yours, but you don't want to hear about it all day. Also look how Bobby boy has ran up the score on everyone, yet he still chokes at least once a year. I hate Oklahoma and we haven't played them in for ever. People from other schools may sympathize with schools like OSU. OSU wins a lot of close games, we USUALLY show some class while doing it, and ESPN never talks for a week about how we are going to destroy our opponent. Its just a thought. I route for schools like Maryland, and Georgia Tech to beat schools like FSU and Oklahoma.

The drop in popularity for the Florida schools should suprise no one.

1) It was an online poll. That eliminates 80% of FSU fans, if it comes down to actually paying AOL or renewing your membership to the North Florida Off Road Association...well we know how that one will play out.

2) Miami has lost 5 games and counting since Jan 2003 and even the media will admit they suck now. 78% of their fans are down at Footlocker trading in Cane gear for Baltimore Ravens gear and Ron Artest posters. 19% are in therapy because not only has Miami fallen but the Yankees and Lakers as well. Whoever said being a bandwagon fan was easy? The other 3% that actually went to Miami are as loyal as always.

3) UF fans are all on suicide watch after the crusher from Steve Superior. If they don't land Urban Myer look for a small drop in the unenployment numbers because they will have mass suicides.
