Blue Jackets star Rick Nash went feet-first into the boards during an intrasquad scrimmage this morning in Nationwide Arena and had to be helped from the ice. An X-ray taken in Grant Medical Center did not reveal a broken ankle, Blue Jackets president and general manager Doug MacLean said. Nash was to have a magnetic resonance imaging test later in the day to determine whether there was tissue damage.
"It would appear it is an ankle sprain," MacLean said. "It didn't show any break, or that any ligament was ruptured.
"You never know if it's two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. It's all how people respond, how bad the sprain is. We don't know that yet."
Nash fell on his back and had rookie defenseman Derek Reinhart draped on top of him when the two slammed into the northeast corner of the Blue Jackets' practice rink. Reinhart was the Jackets' sixth-round pick (177th overall) in the 2005 draft.
"My heart skipped a couple of beats," MacLean said. "It's still skipping."
Nash, 21, tied for the National Hockey League lead in goals with 41 in the 2003-04 season. He signed a five-year contract extension worth $27 million last month.
