My thoughts on Mazda.

I bought a '88 626 new and drove it for 212,00 miles. I sold it and the guy that bought it drove it for another 5 years. My brother bought a '93 626 and had similar success.

The new Mazda's just do not seem to hold up, in my opinion. My brother bought a new 626 a few years ago and I bought one in '02. He has had to replace the transmission twice (the first before 60,000) and has had to repair a blown head gasket. I had major transmission problems before 80,000 and now at 85,000, my car blew a head gasket. I am officially through considering Mazda as a potential purchase.

For those curious about whether it is the cars or the user, I change the oil every 3,000- 3,500. Here is a list of my last several cars with no major problems:

2002 Ford Windstar Van sold at 100,000 no problems
2000 Ford Mustang Gt sold 5,000 no problems
'95 Altima 200,000 no major problems
'95 Mercury Grand Marquis 195,000 no problems
'93 Nissan Maxima 95,000 sold no problems
'90 Nissan pickup 215,000 sold (did have some transmission problems)
'88 Corvette 112,000 sold no problems
'86 Toyota pickup 65,000 sold no problems
'84 Nissan 300 ZX 75,000 sold no problems
'84 Corvette 115,000 sold only minor problems

(None of these are currently on blocks in my front yard)

I have a MX3-v6. 93 It has 164,000 miles on it. Original brakes.
MX3s were built in Japan.
It looks like the Japanese built Mazdas hold up better.
Had a 83 RX7. Fun car, also. Well built.
I like the Japanese built Japanese cars.
Like my 2004 Toyota RAV4.

Got to love the oil change intervalls on these cars, my Jetta is at 10 K between oil changes, my new car is 15 K between... insane

Haven't had any problems with my Subaru either.

No problems on my 2002 WRX with 60,000 miles.

Not sure why anybody would buy an American car these days.

Don't buy a toyota if you want to avoid problems, their quality control has gone to crap recently. Of course, it's because they're selling so many cars and growing so fast they can't keep up, but they've had numerous recalls and are being investigated in Japan for not issuing a recall on a potential safety issue.

I still shake my head at people who tell me to Buy American when their Big Three cars are made in Mexico, Canada, and all points outside of the US.

My in-laws just broke from their allegiance to Subaru after their Outback wagon developed major problems after 7 years. They bought a Toyota.

The larger Subarus are made in I believe Indiana! My Outback was.
The smaller cars are built in Japan.

I also seem to notice a lack of quality, and general "flare" from Mazda over the last decade. But then again, when did Ford start controlling them? Like 10 years ago?

I personally don't have a vendetta against American cars in general. I'd much rather have a Honda, but I don't mind Chrysler nor GM. Not a fan of Ford though.

Just remember, American cars are built in Michigan, Honda's are put together in Ohio.
