My smoking PS2 died tonight at the age of 3 years and 8 months

  • I broke my PS 2 yesterday

I was putting in NCAA Basketball 2007 and the disk never spun up.

So I took the disk out, made sure it was clean and put it back in. This time it spun up, but came to the Browser screen.

So I go in, the memory card was fine and the disk was there. However, it only said PS2 Disk instead of the title of the game (I had a slim PS2 and it always gave the name of the disk in the browser).

Anyway, I clicked on the disk and the screen went black and I kept hearing a whirring noise. Having not played on the PS2 in a while, I didn't remember at first that it was never this slow in coming up. When I bent down to take the disk out and try again, I smelled a burning smell.

I then think that the little motor that drives the laser reader back and forth underneath the disk has burned out. I opened the case (it's nearly 4 years old and heavily used so I won't try for a trade in) and sure as hell, it was smoking a bit.

    Fun stuff

Anyone know where I can get a PS2 cheap?

I'd try EB/Gamestop. I'd gather most of them have a number of used PS2s on hand from people trading up to the PS3. Your cheapest bet would be a pawn shop, though.

I've still got my original release PS2 ... still works, though the drive motor clearly sounded better in its earlier days. Hard to believe the PS2 is seven years old.

Ok...I'll give that a look. My original was stolen when my apartment was broken into back in 2003. I was a week short of going to Iraq at the time, so I didn't care too much.

I bought this one while I was in Iraq. For some reason we got one of the very first shipments of thin PS2s over in Iraq.

    Ok sounds good....

I wonder if I'll be able to talk one of the EB Games places down on a used one
Most likely. Also bring your current one, and any games or systems you don't play anymore. They are very good with taking merchandise and giving you store credit for it. Even broken stuff.

I was able to get a trade-in PS2 at an EBGames in Springfield.

Some kid had gotten a PS2 for his birthday and traded it in for a PS3 around Christmas time, according to the guy behind the counter.

It's practically brand new and works great

Glad to hear everything worked out with getting a new PS2. By the way you said you were going to play NCAA Basketball 2007. Is the game pretty sweet? Just wondering cause I've never played it. Go Bucks! :oh:

    It's ok I guess.....not the best though.

I think this was a tweener year for them as the PS3 is already out.

Honestly NCAA 2K7 is much better at this point.

    :io:
