My First Charity Golf Event

Bleed S & G

Taking Crazy Pills
Hey everyone.. so I haven't been able to be as active as I'd like to be, I have been lurking.. of course..

In July, out of nowhere, I took my roommate/assitant coach/buisness partner - we are 26 years old - to the hospital for a stomach ache. The next morning he was scheduled for a gall bladder removal. The suregon took a second look and cancelled the operation. A week later I was laughing on the phone at what I thought was a joke: "I have cancer, man."

My best friend was diagonsed with stage 4 pancratic cancer in July, and lost his battle on Feburary 2nd around 8:08 PM.

One of the ideas we have come up with, is to do something he loved to do, while raising money for a good cause. Jeremy loved to golf, and he took full advantage of the mild summer and golfed at every oppurtunity he had after his diagonsis.

I have never set anything like this up before - and I'm researching the hell out of it - so I figured I would drop by here and look for more pointers and help (the advice I got when my girlfriends father was given three months to live was 1000x's better than anything I googled or heard elsewhere) I'm in a total information gathering stage, and am like a sponge - so lay it on me.

Here is where I'm at:

  • I am meeting with a group Sunday to delegate responsibilities to, as I know I won't be able to do this by myself.
  • One of the main goals is to start a scholarship fund in his memory, and earmark some of the money raised for this purpose. I'm not sure what all is needed to start such a fund (IRS, etc.) but the idea is $xxxx.xx will be given to someone (either a kid who plays in the league we coached - Pony Boys at NCS or a golfer going to Hilliard Davidson (where he went) to help buy whatever is needed for school. Maybe an essay contest or something to that effect.
  • We would like to have all 18 holes sponsored - with gift cards on certain holes to the four-some with the best score. I am starting this process now, which brings me to..
  • The Bethel Center Bar Crawl - we (my group of friends) typically do 2-3 of these crawls a year, and have since we were 21 at Thanksgiving. How would I go about the "sales" pitch to these bars (and Panada Inn for the saki bombs!) that we would like them all to be a sponsor, and after the July 4th tournament, we will be doing a bar crawl - would you be interested in donating x% of profits generated that night to whatever charity the family decides on? I'm in sales, I'm just not sure how to approach the owners - a printout? a face-to-face? Whats best?
  • We will hold a raffle, that part should be simple enough.. the beer cart girls will be selling tickets all day..
  • I'm pretty sure I can get an Urban Meyer autographed ball donated for an auction at the course to raise some additional cash. Maybe something cooler depending on what my guy has.
  • Do I need to set up anything with the IRS? I don't need them knocking on the door because of my ignorance.
  • We have an awesome list of buisnesses we have realtionships with - like where me and him drank in Hilliard most nights, friends places of work, old clients, etc. - am I not thinking outside of the box enough?
What am I not thinking of? Please, the more ideas the better - many thanks in advance, you guys always pull through when needed.
Edit: My spelling is GOD AWFUL here.. I know.. please don't beat me up over it, I'll edit when I have more time.

Well, not the response I was hoping for  Luckily I have contacts who have run these events before. Take it easy BP. Be back when I can.

You're lucky you didn't get the typical BP response...you know, about 15 posts that have nothing to do with your request, turning the thread completely off-topic.

 No doubt about it.

An update..

We are rolling - it's a challenge to get everything done, but not as difficult as I thought it would be going into this thing.

We should have 18+ sponsors, gift cards/prizes for winners as well as longest putts/drives/closest to the pin. Now the mission is turning to getting enough golfers.

If anyone here at BP would like to play 18 holes on the 4th of July, we will be down at The Players Club course at Foxfire or join us for a Bar Crawl that evening at the Bethel Centre.

To golf, register online or mail in the downloaded form here: http://jeremyisbestor.com

Outing was moved to the 14th a few weeks ago, as the 4th handcuffed us for golfers - if anyone wants to play with us, 8am shotgun start at The Players Club at Foxfire followed by heavy boozing at Mugsys in Hilliard. $75 gets you a round of golf, a beer, a hotdog, and a cart.

Working on unique Buckeye stuff for the auction... we are auctioning off a round of golf for 2 at Murfield.. wish I could share more about the Buckeye gear at this time but it's not finalized as of yet.

While 1st, 2nd, & 3rd won some nice prizes - my group missed out on the last place prize of a bottle of moonshine by 2 strokes.

The auction did well and featured a Thad Matta ball, shirt signed by Posey, Braxton, J Hall, Sabino, Nate Williams, Brewster & Mike Adams, Dave Clawson autographed BG helmet, Jack Nicklaus signed SI, OGIO XX Grom bag, Bob Feller autographed photo, 2012 Flyers autographed hockey stick and Tiger Woods even donated us a PGA tour worn golf glove that he autographed. There was one really unique piece of Buckeye history that we auctioned off too that I wish I could share with you all but it's probably best I don't - at least not on a public forum.

After all the dust settled, we had about 130 golfers turn out and raised right around the $10K mark for NET cancer research & starting our scholarship in Jeremy's name. HUGE success - doubled the goal of $5K!
