I'll let one of the people who have it answer that question, 'Horn.


As far as the list, I guess it depends on what the criteria is. If it is outright football success and nothing more, I guess I would go with Bryant, Bowden (though I still can't frigging believe he gets credit for his wins at Howard or wherever the frig it is), Rockne, and any of Leahy, Fielding Yost, Wilkinson, or Royal. If it is the greatness of coaching, molding young men, academic record, charity, the works, where would I want to send my son, it would be:

Paterno, Hayes, Rockne, Yost.

Thanks for the link Dryden. I had no idea Hayes was so involved in politics.

After reading the synopsis, I'd have to conclude that the man is definitely worthy of admiration. Up until now, I had only heard about his mistakes and tantrums. It's a damn shame the other stuff isn't more well known. What an amazing career, both on and off the field.

So, was there a contingent who insisted he was a Democrat based on his radical idea of integrating the football team?

This is a great questions, but as always, people have a bias to the present and forget about the past. To answer this question, I would look at the four Presidents on the real Rushmore, their accomplishments, and then what coaches match them the most.

Walter Camp = Washington
Knute Rockne = Jefferson
Joe Paterno = Roosevelt
Woody Hayes = Lincoln

Camp was the founder of organized college football; Washington the founder of our country. Rockne was one of the most brilliant coaches and revolutionized the game with his ideas; Jefferson was one of the most brilliant presidents are revolutionized our country with his ideas. In his prime, Paterno was a courageous leader who was progressive while sticking to his principles, but now he needs to retire as the game has passed him; Roosevelt was a courageous leader who was progressive while sticking to his principles, but he needed to retire as politics had passed him (think Bull Moose Party of 1912). Hayes was a controversial coach during controversial times (integration of black players in college sports) who stuck to his principles regardless of consequences and had his coaching career ended unexpectantly due to violence; Lincoln was a controversial president during controversial times who stuck to his principles regardless of consequences and had his presidency ended unexpectantly due to violence.
