He was staying in Italy after a stint in Iraq, and he and his buddy were talking on their cellphones while walking along the train tracks. Europe has those superfast Premier trains, and they didn't even hear it coming (also, rail regulations state that thetrains cannot sound their horns within a certain distance of a heavily populated area, or something like that). Very sad.

when else would you sound your horn on a train - out in the middle of nowhere? that's exactly what the damned thing is for - to warn people!

The part of the story that says something to the effect of "the train sounded the horn right up until the accident, just bleed irony

on a side note, there is a deaf guy where I work, he lost his hearing in vietnam. He has a sign on his desk

"You can talk to me, I'm a good listener"
