I need to upgrade to the 80gb iPod soon.

This is why I don't like iPod's, funny formatting and non-standard hardware...

My shit is all mp3, and has a laptop hard-drive, barring the fact that it is a total pain in the ass to get apart, upgrading is easy and cheap.

I don't have any problems with the iPod hardware, iTunes software, or Apple's DRM/mp4 format, at least not the complaints everyone else typically voices. I understand all of that stuff and realize Apple has to do what they feel they have to do.

My complaint with Apples iPod/iTunes is that it doesn't prefetch the next song in the playlist and support gapless playback between two tracks. Apple pretends they can't do it and advises customers to use the crossfader in iTunes or rip the entire CD gapless. That's asinine. There have been plugins for pretty much every other MP3 device/software player made in the last ten years that supports gapless playback perfectly fine, regardless whether the mp3 file is CBR or VBR. I've never, ever had an issue listening to live CDs on WinAmp or XMMs. Apple's resistance/ignorance on this is absolutely infuriating to me.

Oh, if you don't mind getting your legal mp3s from Russia, you can go here:

Allofmp3

Songs are about 10-20 cents apiece, and full albums are usually about $2. I get most everything from there, and only use iTunes for exclusives and stuff I can't find.

They aren't taking credit card payments anymore... Great site but it looks like the party is about over.

I was able to refill my balance on 3-26-07. We'll see what happens when it's time for me to refill again. For what it's worth, my girlfriend has not been able to use the site for the last few months because they don't take her debit card, but they've been taking mine. Maybe they just don't accept your card for whatever reason.

I can't even get to the point where I can even enter a credit card number. This is From Wikipedia:

Due to action taken in late 2006 by Visa and MasterCard[2][3] to prevent users making payments to AllOfMP3, it has become increasingly difficult for users to fund their accounts.
For some time after the ban was put in place, it was possible to fund an AllOfMP3 account using 'prepaid iCards' purchased from Xrost, but this facility was removed in February 2007. At present, the only way to make payments to AllOfMP3 is by JCB card at its Chronopay processor, or MasterCard at 'e-centru' (this option is available to customers depending on their IP address and physical location).

So I decided to try the Rockbox alternative ipod firmware. I have my psp if I wanted movies, and my major issue with the ipod was the syncing of my music on my local drive and if that drive crashes it becomes a nightmare. Overall, I am impressed with it, I have an 80gig, so I can fit almost my entire music collection on it, and the stuff I can't fit on it I don't really know why I keep. It seems to be a little heavier on the battery, but for me that's not much of an issue since it's mostly a car ipod. It's nice because it works the way I felt an ipod should, I connect, it sets up like a hard drive, and I drag stuff over. If anyone is interested, check out Rockbox - Open Source Jukebox Firmware, it's free and there's a ton of info on there.
