First... lemme give major props to the following:
Donnie Darko
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Miller's Crossing (though I believe its release year was '90)
Boondock Saints (though its cult following is gi-normous. sequel on the way called All Saints Day)
SLC Punk(!) (that ! is there for good reason)
Bound
Sexy Beast(ya scary until he gets fuckin' owned)
Gangster No. 1-nice British gangster flick.
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels-Don't know if this one counts due to the popularity of Pulp Indies (amazing what Pulp Fiction can do to a genre).
Snatch-If Lock-Stock doesn't count, Snatch definitely doesn't. One of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen. Nonstop laughs and a good story.
Suicide Kings-All kinds of good performances in here. Jay Mohr, Dennis Leary, Sean Patrick Flannery. Though I liked him in it.. you know a movie's good when you feel Chris Walken *OPINION plz don't kill me :)* delivers one of the poorer performances of the movie.
Glengary GlenRoss-Spacey. Pacino. Harris. Lemmon. ...Alec Baldwin. The cast alone sells it for me.
Brother-A subtitled gangster movie about a former Yakuza... one of my all-time favorite flicks. This is a must-see for anyone who digs gangster movies.
(Insert Akira Kurosawa movie here, Yojimbo for starters. I think this movie holds the record for number of remakes done about it. He stays on the list because he's the best director ever.. 1950's or not)
Moonlight in a Box-John Tuturro and Sam Rockwell are geniuses. See it. Another one of my all-time favorites... whenever I get too stressed out I think about The Kid... and when it gets really bad I just pop the movie in.
Ong-Bak The Thai Warrior-is out in theaters still in some places... hurry you can still catch it! Another subtitled movie... Tony Jaa does all of his own stunts with grittier fights than a Jackie Chan movie and better comedy.
I do love my movies. Heh.
