Most Profitable Basketball/Football Programs

Most Profitable Athletic Departments: Big Ten

.../snip/...

In 2010-11, two Big Ten athletic departments turned zero profit: Minnesota and Northwestern. Each of these athletic departments, however, generated over $55 million in revenue.

Save for Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin, in 2010-11, every other Big Ten athletic department generated over $1 million in profits. However, Michigan and Penn State led the way in terms of profits generated. Michigan generated profits of $26,649,499.00, while Penn State enjoyed profits of $31,619,687.00.

Interestingly enough, however, is that Ohio State generated the greatest amount of revenue of any Big Ten athletic department. The Ohio State athletic department generated revenue of $131,815,819.00. However, Ohio State?s athletic department also had the highest amount of expenses in the conference, at $113,184,855.00.

tOSU had the highest expenses, but where do they stand so far as number of sports in comparison to tsun and Pedo State?

Ohio State - 36* (17 Women's, 16 Men's, 3 Coed)
TSUN - 29 (15 Women's, 14 Men's )
PSU - 29 (I don't know if that includes hockey)

Remember the Ohio State athletic department also gives money back to the general university funds which counts against those expenses.

*I've also seen a total number of 39 quoted.

great answer Muck....

Probably better take a look at how the 'Departments' are set up. OSU is self-contained within the University. In other words, the revenue sports pay for ALL of the intercollegiate sports, plus most of the 'club' activities (based on daughter's visit for swimming). In addition, guess who paid for all of the facilities (or is paying via principal and interest) --- the sports programs. I read that not one cent is being siphoned from education to pay for the sports programs - some guy named Gordon Gee, I believe.

Plus somebody else mentioned it, there is an 'indirect' charge from OSU proper to the athletic programs, how much, dunno. In other words, OSU charges the athletics (probably several million bucks :)), to use their land, name, etc. These monies get funneled into the general fund for whatever use is decided.

Don't think for a minute that Penn St or Meatchicken get to keep all the 'profit' from revenue sports for themselves. It pays for the same things that OSU sports fund, but their accounting is a bit different. Credit AndyGeiger for being visionary. Instead of being a cash guy, he took on debt to build the Schott, and rebuilt Ohio Stadium, plus the baseball fields, and other fantastic facilities OSU currently enjoys. We (the Buckeye Nation) are enjoying the fruits of his labors while paying back the cost of the construction. Kinda like buying your dream house with a house payment, but enjoying living there as you pay it off.

Hope this helps.
