More Help with DVD Recorders

matz2

Sheeeeeeeeeeeit!
This thing is really pissing me off. I have had the damn thing for a couple of months now and I cannot get it to work. I was hoping you guys could help me hook it up before Saturday's game as the main reason I got the thing was to record OSU games. Here are all of my components:

Hitachi HDTV
Denon AVR-3801 (Receiver)
Scientific Atlanta High Definition DVR (Cable box)
Sony RDR-GX300 (DVD Recorder)

The hookup shouldn't be this hard, but I cannot figure it out. My plan is to be able to record games/shows on the DVR and burn them to the DVD recorder. Any help would be greatly appreciated fellas!!

What happens exactly? How do you have it hooked up? etc. It shouldnt be any harder than hooking up a VCR.

Nothing happens. I don't know why I am having this much trouble with the thing. I can play DVDs and I can get to the on-screen menu, but it will not record anything. I will get back to you with my configuration once I write it down.

Ok, here's my configuration. I hope that it makes sense:

Cable (from wall) - Cable In (DVR/Cable Box) - cable

Cable Out (DVR/Cable Box) - Ant A (TV) - cable

HDTV Out (DVR/Cable Box) - HDTV (TV - Y Pb Pr) via component cable (red, green, blue)

Video/Audio Input (DVR/Cable Box) - Line Out (DVD Recorder) - via component cables (red, white, yellow)

Component Video Out - HDTV (TV - Y Pb Pr) - via component cables (red, green, blue)

I am currently using DVD-R discs.

Also, do you have to finalize a disc in order to view it?

Thanks!!

Edit on the configuration: I switched the following:

Video/Audio Input (DVR/Cable Box) - Line Out (DVD Recorder) - via component cables (red, white, yellow)

changed to:

Line In (DVD Recorder) - Monitor Out (TV) - via component cable (RWY)

It still did not fix my problem.... :(

Actually you need to go video out from your cable box to video in on your dvd recorder

Do I do that instead of going to my TV's output?

then switch inputs on your dvd recorder til you get a picture.

Could you please elaborate more on this. I do not understand.

Thanks alot for your help BM - sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm just going crazy over this thing!

I spend all kinds of time teaching my dad how to do this stuff, so I am used to it. Here is what you want to do.

How you hook up everything to the TV does not matter. You can leave the component cables running from your dvd recorder out to your TV. But you want to run a second cable from your cable box to your dvd recorder.

So take an S-video cable for example, and run that from the video OUT on your cable box, to the Video IN on your dvd recorder. Then set your tv to whatever input you would watch a dvd on........and using your DVD recorder remote, there should be an INPUT button it, or something to that effect. Change inputs on it, until you see the picture from your cable box. Then you'll be looking at what you'll be recording. Make sense?

Ok, I have run component cables out of my DVR/Cable Box and into the DVD Recorder. I currently have my TV on my DVD input and I am pressing the input button on my DVD Recorder (Line1, Line2, Line3). All I am getting is a black screen. I have my component cables in the Line1 Input....

Cable box is on and I tried pushing "Stop" on the DVD Recorder, but it didn't work. I am wondering if I messed up when I did my system setup (in the menu). I wonder if something messed up when the Recorder was looking for receivable channels....

No if you had it on Line 1 (by pushing the input button on the dvd remote), then it will show whatever is plugged into Line 1 on the back of the dvd recorder. You did plug the other end of those component cables into the video out of the cable box, right?

Oh and you mentioned it has a black screen. When you push the input buttons, does anything show on the screen? Like does it say "input 1, input 2, etc" as you push the button?

It is possible that you have to hit another button to get the recorder out of dvd mode or something, so that it shows whatever is plugged into the inputs. I really doubt that though. Do you use any IMs? It is too much of a pain in the ass to do this via message board :)

I plugged the component cables into "VCR Archive". My DVR manual offered this description - "Connects to video and L/R audio inputs of a VCR. These outputs are used for archiving programs that are stored on the 8000HD to a vcr." I assumed that these outputs would suffice.

When I push the input button, it displays "Line 1" and "Stereo".

As far as IM, I have Windows Messanger. I have never used it, but my email address is:

[email protected]

Thanks again BM!

Am not so sure about that. I would say look for other outputs on your cable box. Because that may be to capture from the DVR portion of it only. Can you tell me what video out ports that you have on your cable box? If it has just a standard video out, that is where I would plug the cables in.

I bet if you have it on Line 1 like I said, etc. Then play something from your DVR box, it would show up. But I bet that is ONLY stuff stored on the DVR, therefore you wont see the standard cable displaying.

I am not sure that output will work either, so I am now using an S-Cable out of my cable box and into the DVD Recorder. I have switched my menu settings to tell it that I am now using an S Cable instead of component. Still nothing...
