Two of the WPIAL?s biggest programs border each other in multiple places. The biggest being the Old William Penn highway. When the two Class AAAA powers collide it is more than a game, it is for bragging rights. People will talk about the game for the rest of their lives. This years clash takes place in week one.

Gateway: The Gators feature two of the Top 100 players in the nation according to Scout.com in five-star linebacker Dorian Bell and four-star cornerback Corey Brown. Both are headed to Ohio State. Another Big Ten commit to keep an eye on will be offensive tackle Colin Rodkey who is headed to Indiana. The two unsung heroes for Gateway could be seniors Jeff Parrish at safety and Brian Williams who is one of the most electrifying return specialists in the state. An underclassman that we will be keeping our eye on will be linebacker Delbert Tyler. The Gators are led by junior quarterback Rob Kalkstein who will begin his third season as the staring quarterback. The wildcard on defense for the Gators could be Miami (Ohio) commit B.J. Stevens.

The Gateway Gators played with a chip on their shoulders, due to the fact that a few local papers tabbed Penn Hills as the team to beat in the WPIAL Class AAAA ranks. The Gators made sure that they would leave little doubt as to who was the dominant team as they dismantled the Indians 45-17. Scout.com's Allen Trieu and Bob Lichtenfels were on hand for the full report.

The Gators defense led by captains Dorian Bell and Corey Brown (who had an interception and a touchdown catch), controlled the game. The biggest difference in this contest though was the play of the Gateway offensive and defensive lines. What made it even more impressive was the fact that the Gators were without senior two-way starter and Indiana commit Colin Rodkey. Rodkey suffered a shoulder injury a few weeks ago and he has still not been cleared by doctors to play.

High School: Gators swamp No. 1 Penn Hills

Gateway's Dorian Bell carries against Penn Hills last night. Gateway rolled to a surprisingly easy season-opening victory.

When asked exactly how big he is, Brian Williams said, "Put me down as 5-7."

He smiled, knowing that height might be a little generous. But it is no stretch to say Williams was gigantic for Gateway last night.

Williams rushed for 210 yards on 25 attempts and helped Gateway cruise past Penn Hills, 45-17, in an opening night clash of Class AAAA heavyweights.

Penn Hills came into the game as the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked Class AAAA team in the WPIAL and PIAA. Gateway was No. 2 in both. Guess who will be No. 1 next week?

"The pregame video that we watched was our loss to Penn Hills two years ago when they really handed it to us," said Gateway coach Terry Smith. "We wanted to get a taste of what losing feels like so we don't taste it again."

High School Football Notebook: Gateway's game with McKeesport talk of the WPIAL

McKeesport coach George Smith didn't want his players talking about the Gateway game in the first eight weeks of the season. Gateway coach Terry Smith didn't want his players discussing it, either.

Finally this week, the players can talk all they want about the contest. But they'll have plenty of company.

In one of the most talked about and thought about games of the season, McKeesport plays at Gateway in a WPIAL Class AAAA showdown at 7 p.m. Thursday. The game is FSN's Thursday night game of the week, although it won't be televised live. The station will show it after the Penguins' game that night.

It wouldn't be an overstatement to call this the game of the year in the WPIAL. Gateway is undefeated (8-0) and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA in the WPIAL by the Post-Gazette. McKeesport is 7-1 and ranked No. 2.
