SPRINGHILL TWP. - A 58-year-old Connellsville man died in a fiery crash early Saturday after the minivan he was driving ran off Route 857 and struck two vehicles in a driveway, causing an explosion and fire that burned the vehicles and the siding off a house, state police said.

The man, identified by Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip E. Reilly as Samuel Rush Pierce, died of total body, third- and fourth-degree burns. The manner of death was ruled accidental. According to Reilly's report, Pierce, who had just driven over the Pennsylvania line from West Virginia, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, because there was no braking attempt before he crashed into the two vehicles. Fayette County Deputy Coroner Paul Kondrla pronounced Pierce dead at the scene at 4:51 a.m.
