MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

I don't watch a ton of baseball, but with a season on the line, I'm not sure I trot out a guy who apparently exclusively throws one pitch......that pitch being a change up.

I didn't quite make it to the bigs, so correct me if I'm wrong...but doesn't a change up lose its effectiveness when you aren't changing anything up? Doesn't it just become a slow fastball at that point?

Yeah, seems to me that a change without a fastball is just batting practice.

The only change you can throw all game long is a knuckler. When I played babe Ruth league I couldn't get anything over the plate so I started chucking knuckle balls. The way it floats up to the plate the kids almost jump out of their shoes swinging at it only to whiff or hit a weak grounder to second.

If you could still throw a serviceable knuckleball, you could probably still throw an inning or two in the majors.

An 80 year old can throw a serviceable knuckle ball. The beauty of the knuckle ball is once you get the grip down you just lob it in the general direction of home plate. That's all you do. When I tried to throw hard I made "Wild Thing" look like Greg Maddux. My coach used to tell me, "just pretend you're playing catch with the catcher and forget the hitter."

Yeah, that's why there aren't any in MLB anymore. Because it's so easy anyone can do it.

It's probably generally best to not try and equate Babe Ruth ball days to the current reality of major league baseball.
