Hall of Famer Schoendienst dies at 95

Spent 67 of his 76 years in baseball with Cardinals

Red Schoendienst, a fixture with the Cardinals and one of the organization's most beloved figures, died on Wednesday at the age of 95.

Few players across the history of Major League Baseball were as synonymous with a particular franchise as Schoendienst was with the Cardinals. The Hall of Famer spent nearly three-quarters of a century in uniform and more than six decades with St. Louis.

Gotta love those unwritten rules. Pittsburgh had a 5-0 lead at Arizona in the 7th. The D'Backs reliever was wild. His curveball was all over the place, he hit a guy and almost hit another. He wasn't throwing at anyone - who the fuck lobs a curveball to hit a guy? Didn't matter. Musgrove comes out for the bottom of the inning and plunks the first guy with a fastball to the ass. Wild pitch, error, single, and Musgrove is gone - so much for his shutout. Bull pen comes in and gives up a 3 run bomb, so much for that 5-0 lead. Arizona eventually won, 9-5.

But the important thing is Musgrove "sent a message" by beaning the leadoff man and starting a rally. :roll1:

I'm all for sending messages and such but it starts with properly analyzing the offense you re sending a message over.

To your point, no one "hits with intent" utilizing the curveball.

For those that don't remember the situation, Utley broke Rueben Tejada's leg on a dirty slide in the 2015 NLDS. This was Syndergaard's shit attempt at retaliation when they played in May 2016. Why this is surfacing this week in a lengthy version with all the on-field audio is anyone's guess, but it's amazing.

Very cool.

Here is the slide that happened in the 2015 NLDS

Nolan Ryan throws 235 pitches

June 14, 1974: California Angels pitcher Nolan Ryan throws one of 235 pitches during his 13-inning effort against the Boston Red Sox— resulting in no decision.

Los Angeles Times staff writer Jeff Prugh reported the next morning:

Nolan Ryan seemingly could have pitched forever.

The Angels’ hard-throwing right-hander struck out 19 Boston Red Sox batters in 13 innings Friday night — breaking his club one-game record by two — in a game at Anaheim Stadium that seemed as if it would never end.

And when it finally did end in the 15th, shortly after midnight, Denny Doyle’s double into the left-field corner off loser Luis Tiant – who pitched all the way – drove in Mickey Rivers from first with one out to give California a 4-3 win over the Eastern Division leaders…..
