I’m not an expert on how CA taxes things, but I expect that the money will still be tied to the state where it was earned. I’ve seen it with stock options vesting years after they were granted, but the income is still allocated to the state where the money was earned when the options were granted. I would expect this would be a similar situation.
Nope. And right on queue with the political bullshit. I hope he keeps every last dime.

"What's really going on here is a federal law that was enacted in 1995 by a Republican Congress to prevent states from taxing pension income," he said. "The problem with Ohtani is he can return to Japan and sidestep California taxes."

The provision prevents states from taxing nonresident "retirement income," which can include deferred compensation.
