MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

What a fucking stupid thing for Clark to say. Everything is negotiable, things can be non-precedent setting (even sunset at the end of the year), but nothing gets done when you dig your heels in and refuse to even discuss it. WTF does he expect - full salaries for half a season in empty stadiums?

If they're that stupid then fuck 'em - let's start working on getting football off the ground this year. I'll watch the Korean guys if I'm itching for baseball.

Ex-Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira says MLB players should accept owners' 2020 restart proposal

Major League Baseball owners have approved a proposal that outlines the structure of a potential 2020 regular season. However, uncertainties abound, and one of the biggest uncertainties is whether the players association (MLBPA) will accept the owners' proposal or even anything close to it.

One former player of note thinks that no negotiations should be required and that the players should accept MLB's opening offer in order so that other logistical challenges may be addressed. Here's part of what former Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira said on ESPN on Tuesday:

"Players need to understand that if they turn this deal down and shut the sport down, they're not making a cent. I would rather make pennies on the dollar and give hope to people and play baseball than not make anything and lose an entire year off their career."
.
.
.
All that said, Teixeira is probably right when he suggests there would be significant public blowback should owners and players reach an impasse in negotiations, and history suggests that fans would mostly blame the players. Either way, fraught days are ahead for baseball.

I don't agree with Teixeira that there should be no negotiations, but the owners made a proposal so this is where the PA makes a counter-proposal. If they refuse to do that, and simply say no, then the players are the ones shutting down the sport.

The author sees the owners' proposal as low-ball. Relatively speaking, maybe it is - who buys a car by opening with their best offer? But if the players refuse to counter they are refusing to negotiate. That's their right, but they will have a hard time selling themselves as victims to millions of unemployed people.

Also, Ichiro got his 3000th hit. Always loved watching him, and he was an absolute HIT MACHINE his first 9-10 years in MLB.

he smoked that hit too.....how fitting he got a triple on his 3K hit

Could play the field too. Laser arm when he came over.

Loved some of those Seattle teams back then. Ichiro is awesome.

Ichiro could definitely throw too.
