Mixed Martial Arts (Official Thread)

Present company excepted, of course, there seems to be an exceptionally high douchebag following of the sport. I'm good to watch it in HD from my dvr but I don't think I'd ever go to a live event.

No doubt.

I made the mistake of going to the Arnold Classic on the Saturday UFC 68 took place at Nationwide Arena back in March of 2007. It was elbow to asshole in the expo. I'll never forget the combined stench of steroids, creatine, energy drinks, and cologne that permeated throughout the room.

My buddy and I were two of only a handful of people not sporting a Tapout or Affliction shirt that day. Needless to say, I've never been back to the Arnold Classic.

 Funny you say that. Where I used to live, my neighbor had an on-again, off-again relationship with a douchebag boyfriend. He wore the Ed Hardy [Mark May], drove a 2008 Jaguar that he would only refer to as "The Jag" and was one of those guys who talks loudly no matter where he is so that people know he is around. He was also the biggest, and only, UFC fan I knew. He went to all of the live events, even the wannabe local league events. I always tried to avoid bumping into him taking the trash out or whatever because all he wanted to talk about was "that killer UFC fight" he saw the night before.

Nailed it.

I watched the Penn/Diaz event last night. Only semi-knowledgeable, at best, thoughts:

If you're fighting an enormous redneck who's listed at 250 but has to be over 300, you have got to knock him out. Cro Cop (Crop Co?) had him beaten the whole way and then lost because he let that sasquatch flop on him. Great point from one of the announcers that by not using a jab AT ALL (wtf?) Cro Cop made everything easier for Nelson.

The heavyweight who apparently played football for Pur-Don't is a prick. He was out of shape, talked smack, wasn't aggressive, never put is hands up, and eventually wound up getting his ass kicked. He seemed to have no respect for the sport/match or Kongo. I was glad to see him lose.

Penn/Diaz was a good match, I guess. Again, though, Penn had him hurt and apparently didn't have the power to put Diaz away (he used barely any body shots that might've helped). That came back and hurt him like it did Cro Cop. I hated all the hand holding the two of them (mostly Diaz, until the end) were doing, though.
